"If we had an independent press, a version of this would be frontpage of every paper today.

A journalist is being tortured, perhaps to death, inside a London supermax prison on behalf of a foreign power who didn't like his reporting.

Media + civil society silence is terrifying."

Reuters Baghdad bureau chief had never realized that it was not Assange who exposed unredacted documents. Those who did were never prosecuted.

Those who revealed un-redacted cables have never been prosecuted nor requested to remove them from the internet, writes Dean Yates. By Dean Yates in Tasmania, Australia I wrote a piece for Australian online publisher Crikey just before Julian Assange’s extradition hearings resumed in September

"For months, Trump indicated -- publicly but especially privately -- that he was strongly considering pardoning NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, and considering a pardon for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Yet Trump vacated the White House on January 20, 2021 without doing either, leaving two of the prime enemies of the Deep State in exile and in prison, respectively.
Why did Trump refuse to pardon two of the people who most bravely exposed the crimes and deceit of these security state agencies that targeted him?
I share some insights from the work I did in trying to secure a pardon for each."

Assange Supporters and EF Press over at Belmarsh Prison today:
"We have come here today. Julian Assange has spent over a thousand days in isolation and tortured, without trial, without a jury, and with no presumption of innocence.

They punish the Australian journalist for publishing the truth, in a year where we see honors being bestowed upon the very war criminals that Julian Assange has exposed.
The very corrupt war machine that Wikileaks has irrefutable evidence of war criminality - not only committed by the Tony Blair regime, but continued throughout.

And today Alexander Boris 'the piffle' Johnson MP is another war criminal. A friend of Saudi Prince Bin Salman - the butcher of journalists, best friends with Israeli Defense Department - who they trade in death and weapons.

These are the people that will face an international tribunal, while we demand the freedom from this hell hole from the UK's Guantanamo bay for journalists and publishers.

And we demand Free Julian Assange! There's only one decision...

I would like to thank all the people who've come here today, those who have come to support Julian Assange here at HMP Belmarsh. And indeed those who are sent here to confine Julian Assange in Belmarsh!
And if they look in their conscience they may see that being a concentration camp guard is not the career prospect they signed up to at HMP or Her Majesty's Serco Private Prison service.

Free Julian Assange, Free Julian Assange!"

RIchard Medhurst, who covered the Assange hearings extensively, talks about mainstream media coverage of Julian Assange:
"When it comes to Assange the mainstream media they they instantly have articles published and they they jump all over uh uh the story.
I can tell you something uh I didn't see any of these people in the court - we're like 10 people in the court.
When Sky news rolled up uh at towards the end of the extradition hearing the the presenter didn't even know the judge's name.
He had to like look at a cue card or something it's just pathetic.

So my point here is that you have about 10 of us who are in the court reporting and the the mainstream outlets they rip off, they they they completely rip off um uh you know our coverage and then they twist it uh to smear Assange again..."

Andy Worthington along with Greek Emmy of Julian Assange Defense Committee were at a protest the other day at Trafalgar Square in London, calling for the closure of Guantanimo Bay Prison Center.

GITMO was opened 20 years ago on January 11, 2002.
There are still people being held there, without charge by the United States.

This London protest brought solidarity, respect & love to the 39 remaining detainees. Guantanamo must be closed & the man who revealed it Assange must be freed too

"In the fight for Julian Assange’s freedom it is important to be a thorn in the side of empire.
Whether you support Assange from a background of journalistic integrity, free speech, anti-imperialism, etc. it comes down to fighting for the truth, for sovereignty, for liberation.
Here is a reminder don’t allow the process become the punishment. That is what the predator class wants. Every time you doubt yourself, or self censor they win. With every whistle blown, article published, and protest held we are a thorn in their side. Find single-sourced information; use their words and actions against them. Dig deeper, push harder, scream louder, and always be in search for the truth.

We are all Assange."

"For far too long the Australian media has remained silent in the face of Julian Assange's persecution and that must change, writes Matilda Duncan.

LAST MONTH, Crikey’s legal correspondent Michael Bradley wrote a bizarre analysis of Julian Assange’s impending extradition to the U.S. without any regard for basic facts.

It’s worth examining, as it typifies the failures and absurdities of Australian press responses to Assange going back a decade — filled with lies, smears and false narratives that prevent the public from understanding the significance and substance of his case..."

780 human beings have been detained there in exceptionally cruel conditions, 39 of them are still there, like Ahmed Rabbani

2. as a journalist, I still remember the excitement when in 2011 we journalists got access to the detainees files thanks to the courage of Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange and the WikiLeaks journalists

3. the cruelty and atrocity of their treatment have deeply shocked me. As a Western citizen, I don't know how to ask these people to pardon us for the cruel, inhuman, brutal treatment they have experienced in our name

4. today I celebrate the great lawyers Michael Ratner, Gareth Peirce, Clive S Smith, Joe Margulies and others for their work on the Guantanamo detainees. It is only thanks to their work that we haven't fully descended into Medioeval barbarity"

20 years ago Guantanamo received its first detainees
In 2011 Wikileaks began publishing the Gitmo Files which exposed abuses at Guantanamo
780 Muslim men and boys have passed through its doors
Today there are 39 men still detained

“The time has come to finish the years long process of restoring U.S. moral credibility by untangling the knots that we ourselves tied in Guantánamo,”
~ Lee Wolosky, an American diplomat and attorney who served as the U.S. Special Envoy for Guantanamo Closure in the Barack Obama Administration, most recently as a special counsel to President Biden on the resettlement of Afghan refugees.

Media
Nearly half of the last 39 detainees have now been approved for transfer, and the challenge for U.S. officials is to find countries to receive them.
