In 1455 AD , Johannes Gutenberg produced the first printed book , a Bible , in Germany .His (Gutenberg's) printing press brought together several existing technologies. Goldsmiths used type to stamp their marks on finished products. The ink was based in artist's ink . One innovation was the use of paper instead if parchment or vellum Typical of handwritten manuscripts .

The rise in literacy during the Renaissance created a growing audience for books .To satisfy the demand,
more books were produced in the first 50 years of printing than in the entire history of the world upto 1450 AD

The printing press as a result greatly accelerated the spread of ideas .
