The above is culled from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar.

Brutus is considering whether to lead his forces against the army of the Roman general Mark Antony. He is unsure of what to do and is weighing his options when he utters this famous quote.

The phrase "There is a tide in the affairs of men" refers to the idea that there are crucial moments in life when the timing and circumstances are just right for taking action.

If one seizes these moments, they can lead to great success and fortune.

However, if one fails to take advantage of these opportunities, the opposite might be the case as some opportunities for ascension never knock twice.

There are movements that cannot be reignited after the energy of the moment is gone.

What is the role of timing?

What lessons can we draw from games that draw heavily upon chance, like Ludo, Monopoly and Snakes and Ladders?

Did you ever play ‘Snakes and ladders’?

It was a game played with dice, similar to ludo.

If your piece landed on a snake, you had to go backwards in the game.

If you landed on a ladder, you progressed multiple steps forward.

Life itself is a Game of Snakes and Ladders.

There are People, Places and Conversations that possess that power to project you into prominence and fulfillment.

And there are also mindsets, habits and patterns that can keep you stagnant for years, devour your resources and throw you into situations that take a lot of time to recover from.

In the modern world, the Snakes and Ladders are difficult to discern and differentiate.

With all the information at our disposal, access to information is no longer a flex.

Discernment is.

What is truth?

Does the bearer or intent behind a true statement change the nature of truth?

What are opportunities? 

What are the roles of purpose, mentors and peers?

What about this doctrine of time and chance?

"Too many teachings." 

"Too many contradicting opinions and worldviews."

"I don’t want to make any mistakes."

"Why does this whole thing feel overwhelming?"

"Can we not just reduce it to one paragraph that we can just follow and get what we want out of life?"

Questions, Questions and more questions.

On a previous episode of Night School, someone asked me an interesting question.

I didn't answer because it wasn't the subject of conversation that day and I didn't wish to digress.

For context, the topic was around CRITICAL THINKING and how the entire fields of Advertising, Copywriting and Marketing are built around exploiting the inability of the masses to THINK CRITICALLY.

It enables marketers to bypass the conscious reasoning of the masses and embed tastes and desires into their subconscious which would not ordinarily exist... and then selling said people a product that sates these planted desires and positioning them as critical needs.

I used Internet Marketing as an example of how most copywriters are tasked with weaponizing people's biases, insecurities and thinking flaws for the sole purpose of making sales, not necessarily to solve the problem.

So the question was "how do we know the right products to buy or the right marketers to buy from?"
