Dopamine Detox by Nick Trenton

Dopamine

• Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that sends signals from one neuron to another. Whatever your drug of choice, chocolate, nicotine, amphetamines, sex, social media, or shopping, dopamine is the final common pathway for all pleasurable, intoxicating and rewarding experiences.
• It is believed to be the most important neurotransmitter when it comes to the experience of pleasure, motivation and reward. But it isn’t ‘pleasure’ all the way because the same areas of the brain that process pleasure also process pain, and pleasure-pain work like a balance.

Pleasure-Pain Balance

• When that pleasure-pain balance tilts to the side of pain after the experience of pleasure, we experience feelings of discomfort, restlessness and irritability which can leave us unhappy and wanting to recreate the feeling of pleasure.
• ANY type of addiction makes us malleable and you can’t behave in a rational or ethical manner if you are addicted to dopamine

Baseline Of Dopamine

• The only way to not get hooked to this pleasure-pain cycle is to ensure the time in between each ‘fix’ is long enough for our dopamine levels to drop back to our personal baseline of dopamine release.
• Research has found chocolate increases dopamine above baseline by about 50%, sex is about 100%, nicotine is about 150% and amphetamines is about 1,000%.

Power And Freedom

• Dopamine detox and a shift to conscious consumption with due consideration of the consequences , giving you back some of the power and freedom you lost when you pledged yourself to the rat race and the status competition.

The Compound effect by Darren Hardy Part-1

Compound Effect

The Compound Effect “is the principle of reaping huge rewards from a series of small, smart choices,” made consistently, over a long period of time.
For example, would you rather have (A) $3 million upfront or (B) one penny that doubles in value every day for 30 days?
If you have taken option (B) then -
Day Money you have ($)
1 0.01
2 0.02
.
.
.
15 327.67
.
.
.
27 1,342,177.27
28 2,684,354.54
29 5,368,709.08
30 10,737,418.16

You can able to see the change after 28 days. It's the power of Compound Effect.

Actionable Steps

• Decide to take full responsibility for your own life – even if you can’t explain how you got here.
• Write down 6 seemingly inconsequential positive steps you can start doing daily (like reading books).
• Identify 6 seemingly inconsequential negative actions you can put a stop to. (less watching TV, less playing video games).
• Identify any areas of life where you’ve enjoyed success in the past but may have become complacent and are no longer improving.

Choices

Choices
can be our best freind or worst enemy. They can deliver us to our goals or send us orbiting into a galaxy far far away.

Always remember that -
Luck = Preparation + Attitude + Opportunity + Action
Now -
• Identify the one area of life you’re struggling most with and start journaling all the things you’re grateful for about it.
• Identify and assess an area of life you want to change and that you’re not taking 100% responsibility for.
• Start tracking at least one behavior in one area of your life you’d like to change and improve.

Eliminating Bad Habits

Identify your triggers.

Eliminate those TRIGGERS from your Environment.

Substitute with a REWARD that has the same effect

Either: Ease into your new reward – (if No.3 doesn't work) some habits are easier to change by cutting them down slowly.

Or: Make a hard change – others are easier to dislodge with a quick decisive tug at the roots.

Creating Good Habits

Start Strongly – start with a strong WHY
Set Yourself Up to Succeed – eliminate distractions
Think Addition, Not Subtraction – focus on what you will get not what you lose.
Make a Public Commitment
Find a Success Buddy –a friend or a coach
Set up Some Competition – compare the results with yesterday's progress
Celebrate – training your brain is much like training a dog so don’t underestimate the power of small, simple rewards for good behavior.

Creating Momentum

• Create a good evening and morning routine.
• List three areas of life where you’re not consistent enough. What has this cost you? Decide to be consistent from now on.
• Create a habit register and write down a half-dozen key behaviors (which may be beneficial in the future).

Influences

We Are Affected By 3 Kinds Of Influences

• Input (what you feed your mind)

• Associations (the people with whom you spend time)

• Environment (your surroundings).

• Identify the influence of media and information on your life. Identify ways to protect it from the negative and fill it with positive information.

• Evaluate your current associations. Which must you stop or limit? How will you expand your (good) associations?

• Pick an accountable partner and decide when, how often, what to and how you’ll hold each other accountable.
• Identify three areas of life you are most focused on improving. Find and engage a mentor in each area of those areas.
The Compound effect by Darren Hardy Part-2

Acceleration

Giving a little more energy or thought to your efforts won’t just improve your results, it will multiply them.
• Identify times when you hit your moments of truth and commit to pushing through them when you next get there.
• Find three areas in your life where you can do “extra” and make a plan to do more.
• Identify three areas in your life where you can beat expectations then plan where and how to create “wow” moments.
• Identify three ways you can do the unexpected. Where can you differentiate from what is common, normal, or expected?

Take Responsibility

The day you graduate from childhood to adulthood is the day you take responsibility of your choices.

Story Of Everyone

There's a story about a man riding a horse, galloping quickly. It appears that he's going somewhere very important A man standing along the roadside shouts, "Where are you going?" The rider replies, "I don't know. Ask the horse!" This is the story of most people's lives. They're riding the horse of their habits, with no idea where they're headed. It's time to take control of the reins and move your life in the direction of where you really want to go.

Daily Routine

A daily routine built on good habits and discipline separates the most successful among us from everyone else. A routineis exceptionally powerful.

Find Your "Why" Power

• The most motivating choices are ones that align with your “why” and your purpose.

• You need a deep why for doing stuff. With a why that is meaningful enough, you will do almost anything.

The access point to your why-power is through your core values, which define both who you are and what you stand for.

Core Values: Your Personal GPS

Your core values are your internal compass. They act as the filter through which you run all of life’s requests, requests, and temptations, making sure they’re leading you toward your intended destination.

Getting your core values defined and adjusted is one of the most important steps in redirecting your life toward your own definition of success.

Decision-making is also easier when you are certain of your core values.

Setting Goals

• When you define your goals, you give your brain something new to look for and focus on.

Top people have very clear goals. They know who they are and they know what they want. They write it down and they make plans for its accomplishment. Unsuccessful people carry their goals around in their head like marbles rattling around in a can.

Make a list of your most important goals. Go for whole-life success: balance in all the aspects of life that are important to you: business, finances, health and well-being, spirituality, family and relationships, and lifestyle.

The Formula for Getting Lucky

Preparation (personal growth) + Attitude (belief/mindset) + Opportunity (a good thing coming your way) + Action (doing something about it) = Luck

Learning Vs Studying

Learning leads to knowledge. Studying a topic means you are invested in it.

The world already has tons of knowledge. You don't need to learn more. What you need is to study, to practice, and to take action on the knowledge you have.
DARREN HARDY Quotes from The Compound effect Book

Allow yourself to go and do it wrong. Don’t expect to always get it right. It will prevent you from doing anything.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge.

A daily routine built on good habits and disciplines separates the most successful among us from everyone else.

Step by step, day by day, your choices will shape your actions until they become habits where practice makes them permanent.

You make your choices, and then your choices make you.

You can only control two things in life: Your attitude and your actions.

Consistency is the key to achieving and maintaining momentum.

You alone are responsible for what you do, don’t do, or how you respond to what’s done to you.
