I’m only 25, but I remember as a kid people regularly paying for high ticket items like furniture and electronics by check. The upside for the consumer was not having to call the bank and verify that the unusual transaction was legitimate. And the seller saved 3% or more on the card processing fees.

Would any major retailer take a personal check today? Probably not. A sign of societal decline.
