The US has only spent about $30B actual new military equipment for Ukraine. There was an additional $5.1B in humanitarian assistance given as well.
When you hear numbers like $80B, it’s important to realize most of that was outdated surplus hardware that would have been more expensive to scrap than it was to ship to Ukraine.
Adding up all Ukraine related spending, you will find that it only represents about 4% of overall defense spending since February of 2022. A drop in the bucket.
$35B is an absolute bargain for being able to battle-test all kinds of technologies and tactics, while simultaneously defrocking Russia as a serious adversary.
