If you hear someone call the FTX situation a “run on the bank”, they are either a shill or an idiot. Either way, you shouldn’t take anything else they have to say seriously.

FTX was NOT a bank. Therefore, they were explicitly prohibited from lending with or trading with customer funds—as FTX themselves said in their terms of service.

Sam Bankman-Fried’s explanation of the situation does not make any sense, unless there was theft of customer funds.

If one customer’s margin account goes into the negative, the brokerage firm takes the loss in their general account. If they cannot handle the loss, they declare bankruptcy. At no point should that loss ever affect the value of the segregated accounts belonging to other customers.

One critique: In an interview like this, nothing of value is gained from using an adversarial or hostile tone when asking a question. Other than whatever performative value the interviewer thinks they’re achieving for their own benefit.
