Early indications are that a Virginia police officer was carrying on an explicit and illegal relationship with an underaged teen girl.

After girl cut off the relationship, the Virginia man traveled to California and murdered her mother and grandparents, burned the family's home with the bodies inside and abducted the girl.

The officer was tracked to the desert near the California-Arizona border where in a fight with police, he died.

At this point there are conflicting accounts about whether he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was killed by police.

Scoop: The dead suspect has been identified as Austin Lee Edwards. He had his police badge and agency issued handgun.

The girl thankfully survived.
