The hardest part is daring to try.

Ask 100 people this question: “If you were entrusted with $10B of other people’s money, and you had no checks and balances, could you be trusted to never act in an unethical fashion and put your hand in the cookie jar?”

And all 100 people will tell you that they could be trusted. And maybe all 100 people really think that’s true.

But if you could really run an experiment, how many of those people would have the ethical fortitude to be suddenly entrusted with $10B?

I don’t know. But it certainly would not be 100%.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong missed all the warning signs with FTX. Now he is pointing to Coinbase’s 10Q released on September 30th as evidence of the company’s current financial strength—as though very little has changed since September in crypto.

In reality, lobbying by crypto firms has been very lackluster. They haven’t spent very much money at all to deploy K Street firepower on Capitol Hill.

Showing up as a huge spender in a single political cycle will not provide nearly as much influence as many people think was purchased by Sam Bankman-Fried.

It’s also important to point out that SBF spent $19M on Republican candidates and committees, making him the GOP’s 10th largest donor.

Meanwhile, FTX has only spent the measly sum of $430K on actual lobbying fees in calendar year 2022 and just $50,000 in 2021. For perspective, Citigroup spends around $4M/year on registered lobbyists at the federal level alone and an equal amount on federal “civil engagement efforts” (i.e. unregistered lobbying).

There exists some appreciable number of Americans who believe that children should be sexually mutilated by doctors and exposed to pornography in elementary schools. There is a larger group of Americans who, while not willing to explicitly endorse this point of view, are still happy to vote for people who will write it into law.

You are not going to persuade these people that they are wrong. And if you attempt to, you will be viciously attacked by them and labeled a bigot.

Social conservatives must recognize that they share more in common with citizens of Qatar, at least in areas that matter, than with many fellow Americans. The recognition of this irreconcilable difference demands a serious discussion about a national divorce.
