The most powerful minds in our country are being incentivized to spend their lives on mental masturbation in the world of esoteric, fanciful math problems, rather than curing diseases, creating technology and generating new GDP.
The square root of all the mathematicians in the world will generate virtually all of the scientific value anyway. Cutting the funding will keep the top end working on math (as they should be) and get the rest working on something much more useful and appropriate for their lesser, but still incredible, levels of intellect.
