Let Me Share Something I Learned About Choosing a Major
1️⃣ Don’t hear outside noise… or at least ask why. 🤔
When I finished high school, the chorus around me was the same: “Medicine, medicine or nothing.”
Society said it. Family repeated it. Even siblings echoed it.
And I’ll be honest—I was nervous. Everyone made it sound like the “only respectable option.” But one day, I finally sat my family down and asked them straight:
“Why do you want me to study medicine?”
Their answers?
👉 “It’s a high-paying major.”
👉 “That rich guy studied medicine.”
👉 “It’s respected.”
But that didn’t cut it for me. Those reasons weren’t strong enough to bind me to a lifetime path. They weren’t my reasons.
Most people will recommend a career because of money, social status, or just because “everyone else is doing it.” That’s basically committing the bandwagon fallacy.
So here’s the deal: whenever someone tells you to go into a specific major, ask them why. If the answer isn’t convincing, forget it. Keep asking yourself, because in the end, it’s your bridge to cross. 🌉
2️⃣ Career decisions aren’t one-time events ⏳
We often think choosing a major is like signing a contract for life—but it isn’t. It’s ongoing.
For me, it took years of contemplation to decide between health and engineering. And even after that, it took months to choose which engineering field.
That delay? That back-and-forth? That’s normal. Your heart takes time to recognize its calling. ❤️
3️⃣ It makes you nervous… and that’s okay 😅
The process is uncomfortable. I felt anxious. I second-guessed myself a hundred times. But nervousness isn’t a sign you’re lost—it’s a sign you care. ✨
4️⃣ Think beyond money—think impact 🌍
Here’s the part that finally broke my tie between medicine and engineering.
I loved both equally. If I went into medicine, I’d likely become a doctor treating patients day after day, or maybe a medical researcher publishing one or two papers. I could make an impact, yes—but it would be limited, mostly to the people I worked with or the field I studied in.
But in engineering, I saw something else: a chance to innovate, to create tools or systems that could reach thousands, maybe millions. That vision of impact at scale is what tipped me over.
Most students only search for high-paying majors. But money alone doesn’t sustain you. Impact does. 💡
So, my takeaway for you ✨
• Don’t let society, parents, or siblings dictate your path.
• Take your time—it’s okay if it’s messy.
• Nervousness is part of the deal.
• Look past salary; think about the story you want your life to tell. 📖

Call for Life-Saving Support
My close friend shared the story of his Dorm mate Seenicha, a young student/writer from Bule Hora who’s been fighting a severe illness for years. He’s been bedridden for over 27 months, and doctors say without urgent treatment in Addis, he could lose all control of his body.
The treatment costs are way beyond what he or his family can afford (over 1M birr). He’s literally at a life or death point right now. If you can support, please send whatever you’re able 🙏 Every bit counts.
Bank info: 1000718160522
PhoneNo : +251913612984 ( his phone number )
And even if you can’t donate, just sharing this could reach someone who can. Let’s come together and save this young man’s life.

I know this isn’t really what this channel is for but I’m just doing my part as a human. I did what I could, how about you?

Looking for more Admins!
I’m a pre-engineering student, and I created this channel to make university life smoother—sharing tips, info, and whatever helps students thrive. It’s also a space for seniors to give advice and for students to connect, learn, and support each other.
Right now, we have three admins: me, a senior, and a fellow student who’s been super active—he even built apps like the GPA calculator and My Academia APK to help students.
Being an admin isn’t a burden—it’s passing on the fire you were first burned by and showing others how to avoid the same burn. 🔥 Turn your struggles into guidance that saves someone else from suffering.
Look at Ab Majed, Ana Mohamed, and their team—if they hadn’t created @jufirstyear or JuHit, where would you get info? You’d be stuck, lost in the same struggles they’ve already faced.
Many people, lying on their deathbed, don’t wish they had lived luxuriously—they wish they had spent their lives impacting others, contributing, leaving a mark. This is your chance to do that now, while you still can.
If you’re ready to serve and make a real impact, DM @Ethemsoon.
You can post in English, Amharic, or Afan Oromo.
If you can’t join as an admin, share this with your classmates.
Let’s make student life smoother, fun, and more connected. Together. 💬
