I spoke to a local faith leader yesterday about Richard Wurmbrand, the Romanian pastor who stood up against the Russian communist takeover of his country. My belief is that there are really TWO lessons that men should learn from Richard Wurmbrand's story, but unfortunately, I've found that most men allow the second lesson to completely overshadow the first.

You see, I run a 9-week program for Christian men called Warrior | Mind, Body & Soul. You can learn more about this at warriormbs.com It is a competitive, team experience meant to strengthen men by improving mental clarity, physical fitness, and spiritual depth.

Each week the men must choose a Soul Building Operation. One of those SBO operations is titled " A Perspective Change" where the men watch the film "Tortured for Christ" and then post a write-up to their team on what they learned, how it affected them, and what changes they are convicted to make, especially considering we also appear to be moving swiftly toward a totalitarian takeover, albeit with rainbow flags in place of hammer and sickles.

This Soul Operation is based upon my belief that most American men lead a lifestyle where personal ease and comfort are far too important to them. This comfort lends itself towards laziness, apathy, and a loss of courage. The film is meant to be a spark plug, lighting a fire under the men, helping them to realize how easy they have it, and the importance of getting comfortable with discomfort, and the great need we have for courage.

9 times out of 10, the men who choose this soul operation focus solely on the beauty, power and grace of Pastor Wurmbrand's story AFTER he was sent to the Gulags. How he never renounced his faith, and that his love for Christ allowed him to endure great pain for 14 years in communist prisons, including months of solitary confinement, years of periodic physical torture, constant hunger and cold, and the anguish of brainwashing. He even prayed for his abusive captors.

While I fully agree that his powerful testimony of love and forgiveness through deep persecution should impact anyone who watches the film, there is another powerful lesson that is completely relevant for our times, and often gets missed:

I don't believe Richard Wurbrand had to be sent to the Gulags in the first place.
Wurmbrand and so many others suffered greatly due to a lack of courage of the Christian pastors who refused to stand WITH HIM against the atheistic communist takeover that was happening. Five minutes into the film, a convention of Romanian pastors called the "Convention of Cults" was held by the new communist government in order to persuade the general public that the churches were on the side of the communists. Instead of speaking truth, each pastor, one by one, chose to publicly show loyalty to the communist government, taking bribes from the communists as well. Only one man, Richard Wurmbrand stood up, speaking truth about loyalty to Christ over the State. And while the pastors began to applaud him, they chose not to stand with him, protect him, or fight this encroaching enemy. They took the bribes. Side note: Does anyone remember the tens of billions of dollars of "covid relief money" given to churches who played nice with the government dictates? I do.

Ultimately, due to the cowardice of the Romanian pastors, they allowed communists to grow in power to the point there was no way to actually fight back. And many men women and children were sent to the Gulags and died because of it.

I believe we in America are still within the window to stand together and fight. The numbers of Christians, Patriots, and lovers of freedom vastly outnumber the globalist elites and politicians who are engaged in total ideological subversion of Christian morality and removal of American Freedoms. We have played patty cake with a bear trap for far too long. American Church Pastors, and all men of faith will have to be a big part of this. I hope and pray they will stand together in truth and courage soon, or else there is a Gulag with my name on it.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!
Friends: as the coach of a men’s group including 85% fathers (some dudes are single), this post is late, but better late than Never!! So many of you are phenomenal fathers…And some of you wish you might have done things differently, but it’s never too late for redemption. Even my own grandfather (a lifelong alcoholic), got sober and made amends with his son, my Dad, in the last year of his life. It was a beautiful funeral because of it, and made a lifelong impact on me. Here’s a short clip from Mark Driscoll today, discussing the importance of real fathers to be engaged fathers, rather than allowing the government to be posing as a surrogate father.
