Kingo Nonaka left Fukuoka, Japan, at 17 and arrived in Mexico in 1906.
After eventually settling in Chihuahua, he learned nursing and found himself swept into the Mexican Revolution. In 1911, he treated the wounded revolutionary leader Francisco I. Madero after the Battle of Casas Grandes.
He later joined Pancho Villaβs famous DivisiΓ³n del Norte and rose to the rank of captain in its medical corps. According to accounts of his service, he participated in 14 military operations: two with Maderoβs forces and 12 with Villaβs.
His story didnβt end with the Revolution. Nonaka eventually settled in Tijuana, became a Mexican citizen and a pioneering documentary photographer, recording the rapidly growing border city through hundreds of photographs.
Decades later, Mexico officially recognized his revolutionary service, including a military decoration in 1967.
The immigrant teenager from Japan had become part of Mexican history.
