E-RUPI
🔺It is a cashless and contactless method for digital payment. It is a Quick Response (QR) code or SMS string-based e-voucher, which is delivered to the mobile of the users.
🔺The users will be able to redeem the voucher without needing a card, digital payments app, or internet banking access, at the service provider.
🔺Developed by: National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services (DFS), the Union Health Ministry, and the National Health Authority (NHA).
🔺It Can be used for providing drugs and nutritional support under Mother and Child welfare schemes, drugs & diagnostics under schemes like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, fertiliser subsidies etc.

Is e-RUPI a virtual currency ?🤔

• e-RUPI is still backed by the existing Indian rupee as the underlying asset and is different from virtual currency.
• Instead it is closer to a voucher-based payment system.
• There are already many countries using the voucher system for example the US, Colombia, Chile, Sweden, Hong Kong, etc.
• The government is already working on developing a Central Bank Digital Currency

NPCI

🔹National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is an umbrella organisation for operating retail payments and settlement systems in India.
🔹It is an initiative of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) under the provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
🔹It has been incorporated as a “Not for Profit” Company under the provisions of Section 25 of Companies Act 1956 (now Section 8 of Companies Act 2013).
🔹The ten core promoter banks are State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Citibank N. A. and HSBC.
