💙HAPPY GRANDPARENTS' DAY🧡
The origin of the holiday
The holiday was first established in the United States in 1978, then was introduced in 1990 in the United Kingdom and gradually in all other countries and also in Italy. Grandparents' Day became part of the Italian calendar with a special law inserted by Parliament in the Official Gazette in 2005. In Article 1, the measure emphasizes "the importance of the role played by grandparents within families and society in general." For this reason, on the occasion of the anniversary, Parliament invites regions, provinces and municipalities to "promote, within their autonomy and respective competencies, initiatives to enhance the role of grandparents." This holiday, as also emphasized in the decree, does not involve the closing of schools, but should be an opportunity to explore issues concerning the functions assumed by grandparents in the family and, more generally, in our society.
How was grandparents' day born in Italy?
In Italy promoters and creators of the "Grandparents' Day" (since 1978) were Maria Zanni and Michele Armetta. Later, Franco Locatelli (President of the National Union of Florists - Unaflor) became interested in the event. Arturo Croci, Wim Van Meeuwen and Walter Pironi, who formalized the official Grandparents' Day committee in 1997. In addition, the "National Award of the Grandfather and Grandmother of Italy" was established, which the President of the Republic awards annually to ten grandparents who, during the course of the year, have distinguished themselves by performing particularly meritorious actions on the social level, according to a ranking compiled by the special commission of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy and the Ministry of Education, University and Research.
