🇮🇹YESTERDAY WAS FERRAGOSTO🇮🇹

The name of the feast of Ferragosto derives from the Latin feriae Augusti (riposo di Augusto), in honor of Octavian Augustus, first Roman emperor, from whom the month of August takes its name. It was a period of rest and festivities, established by the emperor himself in 18 BC, which originated from the tradition of the Consualia, festivals that celebrated the end of agricultural work, dedicated to Conso, who, for the Romans, was the god of the earth and fertility.

Feasts and horse races were held throughout the Empire, and draught animals, exempted from field work, were adorned with flowers. Moreover, it was the custom that, in these days, the peasants wished the owners of the land in return for a tip. In ancient times, as a pagan festival, it was celebrated on August 1st. But the days of rest (and feast) were in fact many more: even throughout the month, with day 13, in particular, dedicated to the goddess Diana.

From pagan feast to catholic feast. The feast was assimilated by the Catholic Church around the seventh century, when the celebration of the Assumption of Mary began, which was then fixed on August 15. The dogma of the Assumption (recognized as such only in 1950) establishes that the Virgin Mary was assumed, that is, welcomed into heaven with both soul and body.
