— Occupied Kashmir: Eight years ago today marks the anniversary of the brutal gang rape and murder of Asifa Bano, an eight year old Muslim girl from occupied Jammu and Kashmir, she was killed by Hindu extremists in a crime that shook the world.

Asifa had gone missing on 10th January 2018. On that afternoon, according to her mother, Asifa had gone out to the forest to bring home the horses. The horses did eventually return home but Asifa did not, two days later, on 12 January, the family filed a police complaint. But, according to her father, the police were not helpful. One of the police officers, in a mocking tone, told Asifa’s father that the 8 year old must have “eloped” with a boy. On 17th January, Muhammad Yusuf was at his home in Kathua, sitting restless, when one of his neighbours came running towards him. He broke the news that would traumatize any uncle in the world: they had found the dead body of his eight year old niece, Asifa Bano, laying in bushes in the forest, a few hundred meters away. Muhammad Yusuf was not just her uncle, he had raised Asifa and adopted her when she was a toddler.

The body of Asifa was finally found, broken, bruised, and covered in blood. Asifa’s mother, Rafeeza, who had rushed to the forest to see her daughter, states that “She (Asifa) had been tortured. Her legs were broken…Her nails had turned black and there were blue and red marks on her arm and fingers.”

Asifa was held captive in a Hindu temple for a week, raped, gang raped tortured for days. After five days of rape and torture, before the girl was killed, a Indian special police officer wanted to rape her one more time before the men killed her. She was strangled to death and then her head was hit multiple times with a large stone. The aim of the Hindu extremists was to to terrorise a Muslim community and force them out of there village. The Hindu rapists and murderers succeeded in their criminal plot. The nomadic Bakarwals including Asifa’s family left the village and sought shelter under the open sky in mountains some 150 km away.

After the case drew worldwide attention, including from the United Nations, Indian authorities moved forward with trials once the perpetrators were arrested. Even then, Hindu extremists staged protests demanding the release of the rapists, with several BJP officials openly supporting these demonstrations.

Asifa’s case is just one of countless horrific stories from occupied Kashmir included in the documented 11,269 cases of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, molestation, and rape or gang rape committed under Indian occupying forces between January 1989 and December 2025.
