Happy New Years folks! Remember 65 years this night, two martyrs joined that gallant band of Plunkett, Pearse and Tone.
The following are from the diary of 20 year old Fergal O'Hanlon who died alongside Seán South this day, 65 years ago.

31st Dec 1955 - "Faith is the electric cord that connects us to the universal power line. The plug that connects makes the connection is prayer."

Dec 1956 (1 week before his death) - "I have just come from Confession. I feel great. A good conscience is a continual Christmas...

The day cannot come fast enough when I'll get a chance of throwing in my lot for Ireland. Saint John Bosco help me and give me strength."

On this day, 1578 was the Massacre of Mullaghmast, Co Kildare.

Around 400 members of families prominent in Loígis and Uí Failghe were summoned to Mullaghmas by Lord Deputy of Ireland, Henry Sidney, under a pretext of performing military service. Most of those who attended were murdered by the English army, including some who were burned at the stake.

Painting here is of English Captain Thomas Lee in Irish dress by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger, 1594

The massacre came as a devastating blow to Captain Lee who was not present on the day. When the truth finally reached him, he was utterly appalled. All his efforts at negotiation with the natives had amounted to nothing. The men with whom he had occasionally laughed and often fought had been brutally murdered. He promptly sent a stinging condemnation to Queen Elizabeth - "those country people under cover to do your Majesty's service were brought to a place of meeting where our soldiers were appointed to be and were most dishonourably put to the sword".

Lee had a complex affair with the subsequent 9 years war and was later executed by his countryman for offering support to the Irish during Hugh O'Neill's rebellion.

Before Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill untimely death (either poisoned or death from infected wound) Daniel O'Neill, his nephew, saw signs of mental debility. "God help him," said he, "he talks of freeing Ireland first, and afterwards expelling the Turk from Europe"…
Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill returned to Ireland in 1642 aboard the St. Francis, a ship purchased with funds from the Irish Franciscans in Louvain. Fr.O'Hartigan's remark "this frigate bears the Irish harp in a green field" is considered the earliest reference to the green harp flag

"Language is not merely a superficial mark of distinction between nations. Its influence goes deeper. It has been well called the intellectual blood of a people. For it is more than a stock of words and phrases.....The dictionary of a people is not merely…
"A nation is crowned when it exists in the world not only by virtue of a continuing national life, sustained by history and limited by natural frontiers, but also by reason of a State in which its intuitions and desires are expressed in a form as flexible as its containing life

....And from the past the answer must be found for its future, for the past has stored up instincts and intuitions, old memories of the blood and desires of the national mind, that are waging to burst into the future.

The answer therefore is not to be found in a study of the constitutions of other peoples, but in a wise study of Irish history."
