Self-described 'socialist republicans' have backed an alliance with unionists to combat rising nationalism in Ireland at a meeting hosted by Lasair Dhearg during ongoing crisis talks over nationwide objections to huge influxes of migrants.
Held at Creggan's Ráth Mór Centre in Derry, attendees included members of PBP, CATU, 32CSM, 1916 Societies, and Socialist Republicans for Palestine. Speakers were (L-R) Lorcán Ó Duine, Pól Torboid, Amy Rafferty, Pádraig Scott, and Cllr Gary Donnelly.
Donnelly urged moving "outside our comfort zones," noting that some unionist marching bands include black members and were equally opposed to nationalism in Ireland. He also cited 'people of colour' participating in Twelfth celebrations commemorating William III's 1690 Boyne victory to secure control over Ireland as a positive sign.
Amy Rafferty identified unionist areas of Belfast as the most multicultural, adding that there was "a huge portion of people there who want to engage."
