2001 Throwback:

Guardian's Ireland correspondent, the late Henry McDonald reporting:

According to Interpol, criminal gangs with mafia links based in France, Germany and Italy are involved in smuggling immigrants to Ireland for sums up to IR£1,000. Immigrants from further afield, mainly China, pay even more exorbitant sums.

A Chinese Triad gang based in Belfast, with connections to loyalist paramilitaries, can charge up to IR£15,000.

There are three routes into Ireland from Europe: the Irish ports such as Rosslare, Dublin Airport and the Republic's land border with Northern Ireland. Recent investigations by gardai have discovered a new smuggling route from Belfast. The Garda has two Belfast-based taxi drivers under surveillance.

An estimated 70 per cent of those claiming asylum in Dublin's Mount Street have come via Northern Ireland

Minister Helen McEntee: 80 per cent of asylum seekers are arriving from the UK.

Last week, I highlighted the case of a Palestinian man living in Jordan who said he arrived in Dublin to file an asylum application by first applying for a UK visa as a Jordanian citizen, flying into Luton and then over to Belfast. He said the visa prohibited him from filing an asylum application in the UK.

Footage captured in March showed a family of Africans arriving on O'Connell St in a taxi from the north who subsequently went to the IPO.

Also in March, the High Court ruled that Ireland's designation of the UK as a "safe third country" for returning asylum seekers is contrary to EU law. The new EU pact does not address this.

McEntee here mentions our common travel area with the UK but it doesn't apply to non-British citizens. Taxi drivers or anyone facilitating their transit from the north should face charges of migrant trafficking.

Every month, the Irish Prison Service publishes statistics on inmates, including the top 5 non-Irish numbers. You’ll find the monthly reports in link below.

First image are the top 5 nationalities for March 2024, the latest month, and the second image, the calculation of the prisoners per 1,000 Census population. Nigerians are 4x the Irish number.

Nigerians are 4x the Irish number.

Current population of the Republic of Ireland (estimated 5.3m) was not expected until the mid-2030s in the 'baseline' (M2F2) projections post-Census 2011

F2 meaning declining fertility rate
M2 meaning the expected net migration staying at +20,000 per year.

It’s even higher than the M1 of +30,000 net migration per year.

Belfast's asylum seeker percentage per head of population (0.72%) is higher than Dublin City Council's 0.63% (or 3,719/588,233).

New fact I just learned.

On top of this, think about Rishi Sunak’s comments earlier and David Jones former Cabinet minister, “If they send them back, they will go back again because there is an open border. The Irish cannot have their cake and eat it. They wanted an open border and they have an open border."

I hope those within six counties are ready as migration politics is coming their way, as they about to become a playing field and collateral for the Tories and later Labour government to blow some steam off Britain’s immigration crisis.

‘I think we should send every illegal immigrant in Britain to Northern Ireland so they can just walk across the border into Ireland’

Former UKIP Leader, Neil Hamilton, scoffs at Ireland's threats to send asylum seekers back to the UK following their migrant influx.

How about…they send them back to where they came from?
