"...where I think we should be moving is toward active bystanders..."

I think this common messaging that more-privileged people should 'struggle with things on their own time' vs. expecting education from disadvantaged people (a.k.a., epistemic exploitation) is something to unpack and create third options for
To a large extent, people don't know how to do this... I see it go wrong all the time and then people boundary away from each other
I think we can offer some solutions here
"What βlistening energyβ is required to be able to identify and support constructive signs in the space between [people], a space that is often now called the βintersubjectiveβ space?
This intersubjective space allows deeper levels of attunement [between people] as well as a deeper process on the part of [each person] to consciously monitor personal emotional triggers. Therefore, the βlistening energyβ that we speak of involves the following:
β’ The capacity and freedom to immerse oneself in the [people's] struggles, conflicts, longings, and relationally and psychically based organizing schemas.
β’ Once familiar with these patterns, the therapist is better equipped to βlisten forβ [and understand what's going on.]"
"We have found that one of the reasons this form of βlistening energyβ is difficult to master is that many therapists fear they will become absorbed in the patientβs struggles and be unable to extricate themselves, once they are more fully involved. Therapists also fear that βrecoil effectsβ following healthier steps forward may be a bad omen.
However, once we are able to resonate with our own fears [and overall edge emotions], the process becomes less fraught.
[People's] confidence builds as the [each person] begins to see how the process [of transformative learning] creates a stronger [fellow human being] alliance.
As [mutual trust and understanding] deepens, engagement and greater degrees of change [including power of action to change things in the world and creatively intervene in unjust harms ] become possible."

Some of my notes on this
When people are 'educated' in a colonized/'neoliberal' approach to boundaries and 'interpreting themselves and each other'* this can seem overwhelming.
For example, we're often acculturated to navigate life by reacting to things based on unprocessed experience and 'choosing' according to norms like 'only practical and definitively socially-acknowledged material events and committee-dictated protocols are real and relevant'
And that happens while staving off suffering, violence, and/or discomfort, and avoiding blame with little process of individual or collective reflection and zero collective responsibility or accountability except 'call 911 in an emergency'...
The result might be that people end up with boundaries against reflection and learning, and overall boundaries against knowing -- a.k.a., not wanting to know -- such as Knowledge Disavowal: Structural Determinants of Information-Processing Breakdown in Organizations.
Boundaries against reality, boundaries against crisis and complexity, boundaries against nearly everything but coping and seeing a professional.
(A way to collectively boundary Anger and Epistemic Injustice away β to comply with politeness culture.)
