Message
The Fortune card depicts the Universe in a perpetual state of change. When it appears, change, movement or expansion is inevitable. The card is about destiny and how everything is woven into the cycles of existence. While the card most often denotes good fortune, it more generally relates to fate. Often it foretells of an unexpected occurrence or a change in the direction of events. It is strongly connected to the notion of luck - as an unexpected gift, a chance encounter or an unanticipated surprise. Events suddenly change in direction or start to move at a rapid pace - often a positive breakthrough or a sudden realization that greatly alters our perspective of the matter in hand. An important development relating to our question is about to occur, so we must stay alert in order to recognize and utilize it. The wheel of the universe is turning, opening a doorway of opportunity to us. These shifts in the expected movement of events open and close quickly and so we must be bold and decisive in order to grasp them. Fortune teaches us that the destinies of all life, including ourselves, are interwoven together in an invisible tapestry. Events that we are not aware of are affecting our lives, things are coming into alignment in a way that we had not anticipated.

Many traditional tarot decks call this card The Wheel of Fortune, relating to the gradual turning of the universe in its natural cycles, just as the star constellations circle in the night sky. Every star, and every person, has its particular placement and path on this wheel and is also subject to the larger cosmic cycles. Our personal placement is identified in our astrological make up - see the Kith and Kin. Illustrated on the card is this wheel, which symbolizes the eternal rotation of natures cycles - cycles that are reflected in all of life, including you and me. It is seen in the revolution of the seasons and the cycling of night through to day. Once we realize that we are woven into these cycles at a deep level, we start to appreciate our connection and purpose in the greater scheme of things. This allows us to predict and gather insight into the flow of our lives and feelings. While this cosmic wheel is in perpetual motion, it should be noted that the very centre, the hub, remains static. Within each of us is a microcosmic wheel containing all the elements in the universe, some of which we have greater connection with. While we each journey with the spiral forces through our lives we also have a central hub at our core to which we can find a grounding, allowing us to stay focused through our journey, and allowing us to see a wider picture in different situations. This place of inner stillness and calm relates closely to the qualities of the previous card, The Hermit. The Fortune card may be telling us that we should seek out this central position so that we can get a wider perspective of the given situation. If we've been struggling with a problem, this card can signal that we can find answers by centering ourselves. The card also indicates the presence of cycles, rhythms or sequences in a situation which should be investigated.

Analysis and Symb
olism
As we have seen, Fortune is closely linked to the concept of fate - spinning the destiny of each person. Whether we believe that our fate is 'written in the stars' or that life follows a particular natural sequence, it is possible to get a sense of the flow of events by looking to the underlying cycles in nature. In some respects, this card implies a letting go, throwing caution to the wind and putting our faith in the hands of chance. Often we experience chance events that appear to be accidents although they are part of a greater universal scheme which is invisible to us from our earthly perception. The art of the fortune-teller, and of the Tarot itself, engages with these subtle invisible currents. Fortune is the planetary trump of Jupiter whose primary nature is that of 'Expansion'. On the Tree of Life Jupiter is throned in Chesed, the sphere of Mercy.

The act of constant motion keeps the universe in a state of balance and therefore in a state of stability; just like a wheel which needs continual momentum in order to remain stable. The three Vampyre creatures illustrated on the wheel represent the forces which keep the wheel in motion. At the right is a half Panther Vampyre which represents the positive force - this is the active and creative energy which initiates the fire of life (summer). To the left we see a Serpent Vampyre, who is the negative force of retrospection and dissipation or decay (Winter). At the top we see a sphinx like creature made up of the four elemental animals - its role is the preserver that connects the other polarities; allowing their momentum to spin the wheel and churn out everything into existence. The eight spokes represent the stations of the year. The four elements are represented by the coloured gems - air at the top and earth at the base, with fire (red) and water (green) at right and left. The white gem of spirit is at the centre, while surrounding the wheel are roses of corresponding colours.

Shadow
Generally the Fortune card means good fortune, because the nature of Jupiter is expansion. However when in a shadow position the card can indicate a number of things. It may be a signal that we must realign ourselves more with the natural flow of things or that we must find the courage to take the opportunity presented to us and throw caution to the wind. Perhaps we are in need of centering ourselves and finding a place of calm in order to get a clearer view of the situation. Here Fortune can also indicate that we are feeling that events are whirling out of control or things seem out of our hands. This not only applies to more negative feelings. Perhaps we are feeling dazzled and dizzy by some wonderful new encounter or event in our lives. On occasions, the shadow of Fortune can mean that a disappointment is foretold, and that we should prepare ourselves by centering ourselves and remembering that the wheel will soon turn in our favor if we keep our faith and are joyful about the blessings that we already have. Another interpretation that may answer our question includes feeling held back, a lack of opportunity or the extremes of fatalism.

Message
The message of the card is that the situation or issue can be resolved by making a clear judgment. In order to do this we must weigh up all the elements and qualities to come to an objective and decisive view point. Judgement depicts a Vampyre risen from the grave, he is rejuvenated, confident and commanding. When this card appears it is a sign for us to make a precise decision and to act on it. This judgement is made through detached and dispassionate stand, fairly measuring the various viewpoints to arrive at a true appraisal. A strong approach of discerning and discrimination is called for here. The Judgment card also relates to reconciliation and learning lessons from the past. In essence the card is about weighting up the actions and events of the past so as to put them to rest, allowing us to experience new beginnings, ideas and horizons. It is the call to a new age and a final decision in respect to the past. This card teaches us that judgments are necessary - the correlation of past events leads to the germination of a new seed of beginning. Judgment urges us to consider any issue or matter carefully and then commit ourselves without reserve. Rather than spending time thinking about a decision, we should employ all our powers in fulfilling its outcome. When we have taken the time to compare and understand all perspectives, we are endowed with the powers and knowledge of each, which allows us to employ them towards our new plans. The card can also tell us that we are being judged ourselves, that we are the process of re-assessing our behaviour or looking for conclusions from past events. We should take a rational and honest investigation of ourselves, balance each position against its opposite, enhance what is of value and correct mistakes. The card can sometimes relate to the birth of a new child.

Being objective and impartial in seeing things allows us the see their true essence, free from personal opinions and evaluations. This type of judgment involves a criticism based on contemplation, negotiation, correlation, and wisdom. This approach leaves room for redemption and understanding, allowing us to build a new future. The card is not a rejection of the past but the fuel that feeds the flames of the new. It is a beginning that creates itself from the end of what has gone before. The card may be telling us that we need to self-evaluate, either our stance or view of an issue, or at a deeper, more personal level. When Judgment surfaces it is a sign that the time is perfect for re-establishing a new order and making clear distinctions and commitments. The end of a journey leads to a new horizon, freedom and the riches of a new world (see the following card The World).

Analysis and Symbolism
Here we encounter the trump card of fire. He is the lord of force and dominance, authoritative, self-assured and perfectly poised. This Vampyre of Judgment has burst from the tomb of the earth (old ways), he is reinvigorated, powerful and invincible. He is not working toward hope or entangled in the past (roots) but is
the perfection in every moment, victorious in the present. As a symbol of reincarnation, the card represents the energy of eternally turning cycles, where new things are born when old opposites are harmoniously united. This card is the birth of that which was conceived in The Sun card. On an inner plane, it relates to expanded perception, liberation and the unearthing of previously concealed abilities. It pertains to the creation of something more refined from the burning away of the past. Judgment is also a message of profound insights into time, omniscience and eternal re-birthing.

The flaming cross illustrates the suit of Scepters at its most potent, balanced and active in the material (skull). The panther is the totem animal of fire, standing triumphant and watchful. In the background we see a scorched land where the tombs of the past are devoured by a new dawn of flame, representing the destruction of the old world by fire. Above the landscape hangs the silent moon, a symbol of the feminine inactive force which hold the active fire of the flaming cross in counterbalance. The union of these two energies gives birth to the child of the new aeon. The moon and the fire can be viewed as the past (memory) and the future (thought). The Judgment card can relate to deep meditation, in which all spheres of time and space are woven into our understanding, giving us a bird's eye view of any given situation, and a vast spiritual vision. The endings of all things contain their beginnings, just as the beginnings are held within the endings. The old contains the past and the young contains the future, reminding us that everything contains eternity. In a reading, the card commands us to answer to the call of the new awakening, and to follow our personal calling. We are urged to ignite our personal drive and unique quality of spirit and to determine our own path. With this comes salvation and a rebirth of our distinctive power. The past and its mistakes are behind us. We are ready to begin afresh with a new found vision. This vision is eternally assessing and discriminating with perfect clarity. The less subjective and biased we are, the closer we are to The Everlasting.

Shadow
The dark aspect of Judgment presents itself as injustice, dogma, a lack of insight, prejudice and preconception. These qualities may be present in ourselves, others or the issues relating to the question. The card here can also indicate that we are holding onto the past, hesitating when we should be acting. It implies obstinance, stagnation, indecision or irresponsibility. We may be denying the truth, hiding from a task we would rather avoid, making excuses or never getting past initial stages of an undertaking. When we are feeling low and in need of hope or absolution, Judgment can show us that renewal is imminent. Sometimes the card warns us that we are ignoring a personal calling or avoiding moving into new areas from fear or a lack of confidence. Now is the time to make our presence felt, to condense our fiery willpower into a fist of energy and drive forward with unwavering self belief. Are we taking a narrow view or perspective? Only looking at things from our biased viewpoint? Are we holding back or exaggerating obstacles? The card in shadow also refers to making false judgments, denying justice, regret, and refusing to accept that the past has gone. It may also indicate separation or divorce.
