Gratitude to Will Hall, who wrote...

' Sad sad sad news...

I am deeply honored that I had the privilege to study and practice with dear Arny Mindell - a powerful teacher, wild character, and warm presence. Arny was a master, and he truly carried the spirit and teaching of Jung into the 21st century. His work on extreme states and psychiatry remains a powerful influence in my work and life.

Here is what I wrote for a book of remembrances Arny's wife Amy created:

"I dethrone gurus, with their spiritual diagnoses and prescriptions. But Arnold Mindell - or Arny, as we call him - beat me to it. I enrolled in his school: turns out he wasn't really involved. I went to his seminars: he invented new diagrams and terms each time, etch-a-sketch style. Atop a pyramid where Arny should have sat he... wasn't there. Then I realized: Jung left the Freudians, Arny left the Jungians. Now here we are. It's an anti-lineage.

Not that I didn't try. I sought out Awareness of my Process from the Master Himself, but Arny wasn't having it. He goofed around, he told stories, gave me homework that didn't work and dream interpretations that didn't land. Out of desperation I cornered him: Recommend a book you're reading! OK sure: "Power Versus Force." Really? But... it's terrible.

I was studying under a weird DNA splice of Richard Feynman, Jim Carrey, and Yoda. He wouldn't fill my father's empty chair, but Arny's elusive, impish teaching gave me what I wanted. His books - wonderful, psychoactivating even - are still nearby. You don't need me, I hear them say. You don't need anyone. You've got your imagination, you've got your dreams, you've got yourself. Thanks Arny." '

Arnold Mindell's work was integral and deeply embedded in our very first broadcasts of Intuitive Public Radio.

In this page, we've included quotes and links from friends celebrating Arny's life, and we've included some original excerpts from Arny's books that we read into episodes 001 and 002 — that earliest series we strove through hell and high water to produce as IPR in 2018, when we were posting episode credits on Tumblr.

Spend some time with us in these contemplations. Here are some of the best nutrients in the cosmos.

' I posted this about Arnold Mindell's work back in April, not knowing he was so near the end of his life...

Something inside me said it was time to uplift and honor his work and my debt to him. Arny was one of the teachers who helped me follow those somethings inside me. Great to see how much interest the post got. '

' I did my masters degree in Jungian psychology at the Process Work Institute of Portland in large part because of Arnold Mindell's approach to psychiatry.

There's a lot to learn from here, for example:

"Process Work does not consider a symptom something to be overcome, but an aspect of the personality in need of integration."
Mindell, City Shadows, p. 77

"... a severely withdrawn state or apparently crazy word-salad is not a biological defect, but a highly ordered and reasonable condition expressing a crucial message."
Mindell,"Psychological Interventions in Psychiatry" Journal of Process Oriented Psychology

"...symptoms are not necessarily pathological, that is, they are not just sicknesses which must be healed, repressed, or cured. Symptoms are potentially meaningful and purposeful conditions. They could be the beginning of fantastic phases of life, or they could bring one closer to the center of existence. They can also be a trip to another world, as well as a royal road into the development of the personality."
Mindell, Working With the Dreaming Body, p.3

"...one of the basic assumptions of psychiatry, that disease entities are 'caused' by specific chemical imbalances, has not, until present, been verifiable."
Mindell, City Shadows, p.16

"In spite of increasing sophistication in research and the interconnection between chemistry and psychotic behavior, there is still no one-to-one cause and effect relationship between disease agents and cures. The applicability of disease definitions based, to a great extent, upon the experiences of a given society seems to be a dangerous definition of a 'physical' disease."
Mindell, City Shadows, p.18

"The mental health sciences are in the midst of a typical 'pre-science' stage of development characterized by either too many or insufficient paradigms."
Mindell, City Shadows, p.20

"Almost all psychiatric textbooks speak of mental diseases in terms of 'disintegration of the personality' and 'unbalanced and chaotic states.' Such descriptions are based upon the unexpressed assumption that the ideal person is able to correspond to the statistical average, and this average is taken as a measure of order, balance, harmony and health. Thus, it seems as if individuals going through psychotic states appear as the chaos and disorder for a culture with a particular idea of order and sanity. This black/white, polar classification of the human being lies at the root of DSM III, which only weakly tolerates the concept of a wellness- not wellness continuum of inner experiences."
Mindell, City Shadows, p.12.

"Instead of immediately diagnosing this or that condition, it is challenging and rewarding to ask what people going through these states are trying to inform me about, and why I am not able to understand them. When I forget to ask these questions, I find myself assuming there is something wrong with them."
Mindell,"Psychological Interventions in Psychiatry" Journal of Process Oriented Psychology

"Diseases are frequently formulated by the client as enemies to be overcome. Many who experience their symptoms discover them to be purposeful expressions of the human unconscious which are searching for more more expression. People are, a priori, neither ill nor well in the process paradigm. ...Being sick is a primary description of a secondary process disturbing us."
Mindell, City Shadows, p.24 '

When we anchor patient, respectful dialogue together and practice attuned, collaborative, relational skill sets...

...we make it possible for our scientific inquiry to be more truly scientific.

And we must always remember that for anything we discover or identify, for anything we feel we know something about, there is a great mystery much vaster than anything we can even begin to penetrate.

That's the nature of our experience as living beings.

The universe is deep and wide and sacred and living and continuous.

And here we are, encountering challenges and learning so much more about ourselves and one another in the midst of it.

"O cosmic birth of all radiance and vibration,
soften the ground of our being
and carve out a space within us w
here your presence can abide.

Fill us with your creativity
so that we may be empowered
to bear the fruit of your mission.

Let each of our actions bear fruit
in accordance with our desire.

Endow us with the wisdom
to produce and share what
each being needs to grow and flourish.

Untie the tangled threads
of destiny that bind us
as we release others
from the entanglement of past mistakes.

Do not let us be seduced
by that which would divert us
from our true purpose,
but illuminate the opportunities
of our present moment.

For you are the ground
and the fruitful vision,
the birth, power and fulfillment
as all is gathered
and made whole once again.

And so it is."

' Arny Mindell, teacher, visionary and one of the most unusual people in this world, passed on June 10th. Amy has written a beautiful tribute below.
He was unusual in how he lived and manifested the realm of dreaming. He was playful, irreverent, and had little interest in convention. I have often wondered what it was inside of him that attracted him to see the value in what was most overlooked, marginalized, judged, disavowed, and disturbing. How he could explore disturbing body experiences, relationship issues, world problems and develop a path to unfold the great mystery embedded in such experiences. This freed many of us; brought meaning in new ways and less suffering. I am forever grateful for this world view and the very practical applications of Process Work that have helped me and others make meaning and connect to more dreaming states of mind, and to find surprising out-of-the-box solutions.

I met Arny when I was 20 years old. I grew up with him and the learning community that was gathering around him, growing Process Work. I feel so extremely fortunate. The tributes from all over the world have moved me so deeply. The photos and videos have made me smile and brought tears. Since his death I have connected and re-connected with so many = Arny, the heart of community is still at work.

Arny has prepared us all for this moment. He has always been a dreaming presence, encouraged people to connect to his spirit in life or in death. So, although I will miss seeing his smile and physical presence, I feel he is with me. I am grateful.

Many have posted photos and I thought to dig up some old ones from early seminars in the Swiss mountains to add to the mix. Arny in action -- the sense of community. Working with me on back pain ended up with the ecstasy of reaching to the stars. The day after he died, I dreamed he would be flirting with me to remind me of this "starburst."

Sending big love to all in celebration of Arny Mindell! '

' Dear Friends,
I am so deeply moved by the immediate and enormous outpouring of love and gratitude toward Arny that you share in your messages. Your loving thoughts and feelings about the exquisite gifts he’s given to each of you and our world touch me deeply, and I know touch him as well. It’s so heartwarming to feel how his work, life, and spirit will live on in all your hearts and through the work you each do in the world, fulfilling one of his deepest wishes - to make the world a better place for everyone. Thank you as well, for your love for both of us as a couple and your support for me. It is healing and holds me up when I feel I will fall.
I wish I was capable of answering every single message, but I’m quite exhausted and there are so many! I will take them in and cherish them over time.
You may not know this, but connecting with all of you on Facebook has always been incredibly important for Arny. He looked at Facebook many times each day, even very late at night after a full day, because he really wanted to be in touch with his world family – one of the most important things in his life.
On his 80th birthday, I wrote a song and made a video for him which you can click on here. I hope it will remind you of his incredibly beautiful spirit. He loved the song, and played this video over and over again during the past months.
Please take care of yourselves, follow your deepest process, and connect with Arny through the sea or wherever is right for you. He is a person, a spirit, and a dream that will live on inside of you and everyone who loves him.
With all my heart, amy
p.s. I am not yet sure when the online celebration of Arny’s life will take place or the time of offering his ashes to the sea here in Yachats. I will let you know. '

' Last year I posted a factual news story about the US empire's war in Syria and my Facebook account was frozen for 30 days by Facebook acting on behalf of government censorship policies. The shutdown of my account included not being able to use my Facebook messenger.

Now Facebook is threatening to again shut down my account, again because I again published factual information: this time about SSRI anti-depressants (information that challenges industry narratives about the chemical imbalance theory of depression).

Both US political parties supported industry deregulation and policymaking that, without any meaningful democratic input, rapidly replaced our public free speech and assembly rights with authoritarian new systems. The internet and social media are vital technologies in our democracy, and should be pubic trusts regulated as utilities, just like the phone system and post office they replace. They shouldn't be handed over to private industry to become surveillance and advertising industries serving as political extensions of the state department and Pharma.

Imagine sending out a newsletter from your mailbox expressing your political views and then one day going to your mailbox and seeing a padlock on it with a note saying the government doesn't like what you've been mailing out. Or one day trying to make a phone call on your phone and instead getting a message that you can't because the call you made previously included talking about issues the government doesn't like. Or going to the atm and not being able to withdraw money because you recently donated to an organization the government doesn't like.

That is what is happening.

But sure, vote for Biden, or for Trump, they'll fix this no prob. '

' Every child has the right to be happy. By law.

In the near future, a young social worker (Sunita Mani, “Glow” & "Mr. Robot") travels to a small community to administer behavior-modifying "patches" that guarantee happiness for the wearers. She must decide what to do when a precocious girl (Audrey Bennett, “Frozen on Broadway”) refuses to accept the patch.

Director's Statement:

As someone with a close family member who struggles with severe mental health issues, the way that we understand and help people with these challenges is always on my mind. So, when I stumbled across a Harvard bioethicist’s blog about the idea of always-on, perfectly-administered drip dosage of antidepressants, an entire world began to form in my head where this technology was a part of everyday life.

I started to think about what this could do for people in our country, but also what it would do for our country’s culture. Who would use it? How would we handle this as a society? And also, how might the government address the disparity in privilege this technology would create between children who grew up with the wealth to be “happy” and those who did not? This lead me to think about what the government’s responsibility is to “level the playing field” in health and where can human freedom be factored into these decisions?

There are a number of contentious issues in our country that, at their core, are discussions that pit something that might make society “better” against a loss of individual freedoms. We all agree it’s good the government removes citizens’ “freedom” to drive on the left side of the road in return for having safe roads. But where should the line be between giving up a freedom that makes “society” a better place, and allowing citizens to retain important autonomy? Many of us disagree about where this line might be for different issues like guns, education, or medical care, but I hope that this film serves as a starting place to discuss these issues, and for each side to empathize with the values and motivations of the other.
