'Rollie Pollies' Remove Heavy Metals From Soil, Stabilizing Growing Conditions -
These grey-colored creatures, also known as βrollie polliesβ or woodlice, can be found in many dark, humid environments feeding on decaying matter. And actually, they are not even bugs. They are crustaceans and more closely resemble crabs and shrimp, notβ¦

Like most other indoor farms, the facility uses hydroponics, technology that grows food with little water, and doesnβt require the use of pesticides. (It also avoids the risk of disease outbreaks like salmonella that can happen on outdoor farms.) The company makes its own LED lights, which have become far more efficient over the last decade; electricity is one of the largest costs of this type of agriculture.
The new farm, covering more than 75,000 square feet, will run fully on wind power, slashing the carbon footprint of production. In theory, because the greens will be much fresher when they reach grocery stores and consumers, the system can also help reduce food waste. The majority of the farm, with 14 shelves of greens stacked up toward the ceiling, is automated, so labor costs are low.

I do also! I am fascinated by these processes and the collaborative resources that different groups are bringing to bear.

I like the magic of growing things...in a clean and healthy environment. The LED lights especially in hydroponics is something I am trying to learn from different sources online, especially if you have different weather and limited space. Amazing!!

Saving space; increased yield; can be set up anywhere in the world; I wonder and am looking to find out more about the minimum time & money someone would need to spend working on this. Also β- I wonder if this kind of setup could be created as part of a "living vehicle"? a traveling farm on wheels?β-@maxmorris

There are other cool techniques for vertical farming that involve aerosol spray jets minimizing water, and food even further. I will try and find the video its really cool. (zp)
