The word terror means “great fear, dread, alarm, panic” and the word “horror” comes from an old word meaning “to bristle” and refers to the gooseflesh and hair raising that happens when we are truly frightened. And finally, the word “scare” is an old Norse word and means “timid, shy, to shrink from, to avert.” '

Excerpted from the Editor's Note in Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut,

' The title of the book is Campbell’s. It is taken from a speech by Mephistopheles in Goethe’s Faust.

As translated by Carlyle F. MacIntyre (New Directions, 1941), the speech is this:

"I am a part of the part that at first was all, part of the darkness that gave birth to light, that supercilious light which now disputes with Mother Night her ancient rank and space, and yet can not succeed; no matter how it struggles, it sticks to matter and can’t get free. Light flows from substance, makes it beautiful; solids can check its path, so I hope it won’t be long till light and the world’s stuff are destroyed together."

The dedication of the book is Campbell’s too. Of the dedication, Campbell wrote this in a chapter he later discarded:

"Before seeing what sort of a book I was going to have here, I wrote the dedication—'To Mata Hari.' She whored in the interest of espionage, and so did I.
Now that I’ve seen some of the book, I would prefer to dedicate it to someone less exotic, less fantastic, more contemporary—less of a creature of silent film.
I would prefer to dedicate it to one familiar person, male or female, widely known to have done evil while saying to himself, 'A very good me, the real me, a me made in heaven, is hidden deep inside.'
I can think of many examples, could rattle them off after the fashion of a Gilbert and Sullivan patter song. But there is no single name to which I might aptly dedicate this book— unless it would be my own.
Let me honor myself in that fashion, then:

On Arnold Mindell's Facebook page, Amy Mindell shared,

' Dear friends, (this is another message from me, Amy)
Today, when I was deeply missing Arny’s physical presence, I looked at a book I made for him on his 80th birthday called, “The Process Way”. The book is filled with photos and some of Arny’s spontaneous ideas, paintings, and public posts. Arny adored the book and looked at it often in recent months and over the last years.
This afternoon, it was hot on the coast and the windows in our house were open. I put the book down on a table and suddenly, it blew open to a page with one of Arny’s paintings and his words on it (see the photo). I felt he wanted me, and perhaps all of us, to see it.
The page reminded me of something Arny has often said – that we should not identify him (or anyone) only with their body and static identity, but to remember that we are also timeless, flowing processes (you can sense this in Arny’s wonderful painting.)
I then remembered another one of his quotes in the book which says, “We are timeless, thousands of years old, and involved with processes which go beyond our present identity. This gives us an eternal feeling, but one which is realizable right here in the moment. "

' As applied by the Stasi, Zersetzung is a technique to subvert and undermine an opponent. The aim was to disrupt the target's private or family life so they are unable to continue their "hostile-negative" activities towards the state. Typically, the Stasi would use collaborators to garner details from a victim's private life. They would then devise a strategy to "disintegrate" the target's personal circumstances—their career, their relationship with their spouse, their reputation in the community. They would even seek to alienate them from their children. [...] The security service's goal was to use Zersetzung to "switch off" regime opponents. After months and even years of Zersetzung a victim's domestic problems grew so large, so debilitating, and so psychologically burdensome that they would lose the will to struggle against the East German state. Best of all, the Stasi's role in the victim's personal misfortunes remained tantalisingly hidden. The Stasi operations were carried out in complete operational secrecy. The service acted like an unseen and malevolent god, manipulating the destinies of its victims.

It was in the mid-1970 that Honecker's secret police began to employ these perfidious methods. At that moment the GDR was finally achieving international respectability. [...] Honecker's predecessor, Walter Ulbricht, was an old-fashioned Stalinist thug. He used open terror methods to subdue his post-war population: show trials, mass arrests, camps, torture and the secret police.

But two decades after east Germany had become a communist paradise of workers and peasants, most citizens were acquiescent. When a new group of dissidents began to protest against the regime, Honecker came to the conclusion that different tactics were needed.
