There is a Benedictine saying — Ora et Labora (Prayer with Work).

Work is a gift from God. After life, it was His first gift to man. Work draws us closer to God through our doing of our vocation.

I have a book of ancient Celtic prayers and so many of them are task specific -- the prayers being said while at the loom, while milking, while gathering the harvest, while banking the fire for the night...

I am so moved by these prayers because they reflect a people who, while certainly unable to, but perhaps unmoved to, drop everything they were doing to "go be with God".

Rather, these prayers reflect that they saw God as there with them in all moments, in all the smallnesses of the whole day, from rising to going to sleep. And that they accepted the blessing that each act of their work can be a connection with God.

' Imbolc is one of four Celtic holidays called "fire festivals" because the ritual lighting of bonfires and bonfires is an integral part of it. In this case, however, fire is considered in its aspect of light, it is actually a period of growing light.

A very good custom is to light a candle or a white candle at sunset. This candle will light your path. You can keep it lit even while performing other magical works, it will be a beacon that will light the way in the dark night.

Ice lantern Imbolc.

You will need:
- herbs, flowers, berries (of your choice)
- bowl
- glass jar (smaller than your bowl)
- Water
- candle

Lantern assembly
Place your herbs and flowers in a bowl. Fill the bowl about 2/3 full

Place the jar in the center of the bowl. It should sink to the bottom. If the temperature outside is below zero, simply place the bowl outside overnight.
If not, put it in the freezer overnight.

Once it has completely set, let the bowl sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes.

If you want to speed up the process, you can fill the inside of the jar with a little warm water.

Gently rotate the can until it is free of ice. Once you have it out, slowly remove the ice lantern from the bowl.

The skillful combination of fire and ice in this lantern is well suited for elemental magic. For Imbolc, these two elements play a special role in the changing of the seasons. As we experience the coldest months of the year, fire encased in ice reminds us of the return of light and the hopeful approach of spring.
