🌟 What happens when you let AI generate as much of a full-stack InterSystems IRIS application as possible?
The answer: a working backend and frontend, built in a fraction of the usual time. The experiment used the Samples BI Demo package (HoleFoods sales data) as the data model, OpenAI Codex as the coding assistant, and a minimal setup — VS Code, the ObjectScript extension, Docker, and a basic project template from Open Exchange.
The part that stood out: once Codex generated the Swagger specification class and it was compiled, InterSystems IRIS automatically produced the routing class and the business logic stubs. AI then filled in the CRUD implementation, security configuration, and unit tests. The frontend was scaffolded from the OpenAPI specification using Lovable in a few minutes.
One thing that made a real difference: AGENTS.md — a file with project-specific conventions that gave the coding assistant context about how ObjectScript code should be structured. It noticeably improved the quality and consistency of everything generated 😄

InterSystems IRIS gets called a "Universal NoSQL" database, and the reason comes down to one thing: Global Storage. ⚡️
Global Storage stores data as persistent, schema-free hierarchies — nested arrays where you don't have to define the structure in advance. 🌳 A node looks like this:
Country, city, employee ID, property — the hierarchy goes as deep as you need, and only nodes that actually hold data take up space. 💾
What makes it interesting is that the same hierarchy underneath can be shaped into very different things: key/value pairs, JSON-like documents, graphs, even relational tables. 🔄 It's also why the structure maps so naturally onto JSON — QEWD-JSdb uses exactly that to let you work with persistent data as plain JavaScript objects, with no separate database API in the way. 📦
IRIS and Caché implement this natively, and so does YottaDB. The same idea has also been built on top of Redis, Berkeley DB, and LMDB elsewhere. 🛠️
