Human Rights Watch report on attacks in June:
Crowd attacks and sectarian incitement targeted alleged Assad supporters and members of religious minorities, particularly Alawites, in several governorates between June 13 and 17, 2026, coinciding with protests demanding accountability for the Assad regime's crimes.
In Damascus – Mezzeh 86 neighborhood (predominantly Alawite): A crowd of 300-400 people gathered and attacked shops, breaking windows, firing shots inside, beating shop owners with stun guns and stabbing them, while chanting sectarian slogans and insults. One shop owner estimated the losses at around $1,000.
In Idlib – Kafr Takharim: Elderly man Shukri al-Kayali was killed after being dragged, tortured, and left in the street. In the Sheikh neighborhood of Kafr Takharim, Fadi Rabou was found dead amidst chants of "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great).
The report documented a rapid shift from targeting individuals to collective punishment of entire communities, fueled by incitement on social media and sect
