🇺🇦🇹🇩🇲🇱🇧🇫🇸🇩⚡️ — Ukraine is conducting a struggle against Russia far beyond the borders of Europe, sending small groups of drone specialists to Africa and the Middle East to train local forces, support anti-Russian groups, and exert influence on Russian interests, CNN reports.

Approximately 15 Ukrainian specialists are working in northern Mali alongside the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg-led group, providing training on drone operation, intelligence information, and remote operational support, without directly participating in frontline combat.

Ukrainian military personnel have also trained forces from Chad, Niger, and Burkina Faso, and several specialists have been deployed to Sudan.

According to Ukrainian intelligence, these deployments are aimed at putting pressure on Russia abroad, as well as transforming Ukrainian expertise in drones into a "tool of foreign policy."

Ukrainian military personnel assisted Tuareg rebels during the capture of the city of Kidal earlier this year, when rebel forces and militants linked to the JNIM, a group banned in some countries, attacked Russian "African Corps" units.

Ukrainian military personnel describe their cooperation with the Tuaregs as pragmatic rather than ideological, with one intelligence source stating: "When the same idiots are attacking you, ideological differences take a back seat."

Ukraine also maintains a presence of naval drone operators in northwestern Libya since the end of 2025. One operator reported that his unit is using an international military base in Misrata to conduct attacks against Russia's "shadow fleet," which is attempting to circumvent sanctions, as well as to train local forces. Earlier this year, one of Ukraine's reconnaissance naval drones went out of control and drifted to Greece, prompting a protest from Athens and an apology from Kyiv.

Ukraine has also sent teams to at least five countries in the Middle East to train them in how to shoot down Iranian Shahed drones during the war.

Ukrainian officials portray these overseas missions as a way to weaken Russia wherever it operates, as well as an opportunity to test Ukrainian drone technology in various combat conditions, from extreme heat and dust in the Sahel region to naval operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
