🇸🇦🇶🇦🇦🇪🇮🇷The Gulf countries are considering the construction of new pipelines to bypass the Strait of Hormuz due to the threat of long-term Iranian control over it, reports the Financial Times, citing sources.

According to officials and industry leaders, new pipelines could be the only way to reduce the chronic vulnerability of Gulf countries to disruptions in the strait, although such projects will be very expensive, politically complex, and will require many years to implement.

The current conflict has highlighted the strategic value of the 1,200-kilometer Saudi "East-West" pipeline. Built in the 1980s due to fears that the "tanker war" between Iran and Iraq would close the strait, it now serves as a vital lifeline, pumping 7 million barrels of oil per day to the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea, completely bypassing Hormuz.

The possibility of further expanding the capacity of the "East-West" pipeline or building new routes is being studied. One option is to revive the American project to create a corridor from India through the Persian Gulf to Europe (IMEC).

Previous plans to build pipelines in the region have repeatedly been disrupted due to high costs and complexity.
