🇺🇸🇰🇵The American special forces unit "Navy SEALs" attempted a secret operation on North Korean territory in 2019, but it ended in failure, The New York Times reports, citing sources.

According to the publication, the mission's goal was to install an electronic device that would allow American intelligence to intercept conversations of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during the period when he was negotiating with U.S. President Donald Trump on the nuclear issue. Eavesdropping on communications in North Korea was considered a strategic "blind spot" that Washington sought to eliminate.

The unit landed on a rocky shore at night, dressed in black wetsuits. The mission quickly went off plan: a North Korean boat appeared nearby, shining spotlights from the bow onto the water. The SEALs, fearing they had been discovered, opened fire. All those on board the North Korean boat were killed in the shootout. The unit retreated without installing the listening device.

This operation was never publicly disclosed by either the North Korean or U.S. authorities. Key congressmen overseeing intelligence operations were not informed about the incident, which could have been a violation of the law, notes the NYT.

Women buried under collapsed buildings had to wait for other women from neighboring settlements to finally pull them out.

The earthquake claimed 2,200 lives. Another 3,600 were injured.
