European Commission President von der Leyen stated that the EU is ready with "proportionate countermeasures."

"We will take all necessary steps to protect the interests of the EU. The introduction of 30% tariffs on exports from the EU will disrupt important transatlantic supply chains, which will harm businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic," von der Leyen said, adding that the EU is ready to continue "constructive negotiations with the US on a trade agreement."

Politico also reports that European Commission staff were ordered to postpone weekend plans and return to work. And government officials of EU countries immediately switched to crisis mode to try to assess further actions.

Five EU diplomats confirmed that ambassadors will meet at 3:30 PM on Sunday for emergency talks ahead of the bloc's trade ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday.
