Klaus Barbie, born in 1913 in Germany, was a high-ranking officer and Gestapo chief infamous for his brutal role during World War II, earning him the notorious nickname “The Butcher of Lyon.”

During the Nazi occupation of France, Barbie served as head of the Gestapo in Lyon from 1942 to 1944. He orchestrated widespread torture, deportations, and executions, personally overseeing the brutal interrogation of prisoners using methods like beatings, electric shocks, and water torture.
