The Iraqi authorities' position is being discussed with US officials in Washington this week at a security summit, but no agreement has yet been reached. Currently, the Americans have about 2,500 military personnel in the country. They are stationed at three main bases: one in Baghdad, one in the western province of Anbar and one in northern Kurdistan.

Iraq wants troops from a U.S.-led military coalition to begin withdrawing in September and to formally end the coalition's work by September 2025, four Iraqi sources said, with some U.S. forces likely to remain in a newly negotiated advisory capacity.
