Why not before, joker? Once a major industrial hub of the Ukraine (that much is true) - the Donetsk Republic contributed a disproportionate amount of revenue towards the Ukrainian GDP, due to its wealth of natural resources & production capacity.

In 2015, what Ukraine chose to do is alienate its Russian-speaking Eastern regions by imposing economic sanctions against their own countrymen, AND key economic contributors. 🤦‍♂️

Donetsk - it's a city of the future! Just not within Ukraine.
