Imperialistische Spannungen heizen die Arktis auf
Trumps jüngst geäußerten Absichten, Grönland zu erwerben und Kanada zu übernehmen, zeigen deutlich, dass die USA ein zunehmendes Interesse an der Arktis haben. Das Gebiet beherbergt eine große Anzahl strategischer Ressourcen wie Gas, Öl, seltene Erden, Gold und Lithium, die für die US-Wirtschaft von erheblichem Wert sind um künftigen Krisen zu begegnen. Der Vorteil, sich diese sowohl für wirtschaftliche als auch für militärische Zwecke einzuverleiben, liegt auf der Hand, ganz zu schweigen von der strategischen geografischen Lage Grönlands angesichts der Spannungen zwischen den USA und Russland. Die USA sind bei weitem nicht die einzige Macht die an diesem Gebiet interessiert ist. Russland, Kanada, die skandinavischen Länder und sogar europäische und ostasiatische Länder, die nicht direkt mit der Region verbunden sind (China bezeichnete sich selbst als „nahe der Arktis gelegenen Staat“), haben ein aktives Interesse an diesem Gebiet gezeigt.
