Damaged Nord Stream pipelines have already spilled more than half of the gas in storage

More than half of the gas stored in the Nord Stream pipelines that were damaged by apparent sabotage has already escaped through the three leaks detected, according to the Danish Energy Agency, which expects the infrastructure to be completely empty before the end of the week at this rate.

The head of the agency, Kristoffer Boettzauw, told the media on Wednesday about the effects of this incident, which occurred in the Baltic Sea near the island of Bornholm. Both pipelines contain pressurized gas, although they are not currently in operation.

According to initial estimates, the massive methane leak is equivalent in terms of environmental pollution to one third of the damage attributable to the whole of Denmark for a year. However, Boettzauw has clarified that there is no risk to the population.

Telecoms industry officials say they fear a severe winter will put Europe's telecoms infrastructure to the test, forcing companies and governments to try to mitigate the impact.

European Union countries, including France, Sweden and Germany, are trying to ensure communications can continue even if power cuts end up exhausting back-up batteries installed on the thousands of cellular antennas spread across their territory.

Europe has nearly half a million telecom towers and most of them have battery backups that last around 30 minutes to run the mobile antennas.

Russian spy chief: we have evidence West involved in 'sabotage' of Nord Stream pipelines

Russia's top spy said on Friday that Moscow had materials which indicated the West had a role in ruptures to the undersea Nord Stream pipelines.

"We have materials that point to a Western trace in the organisation and implementation of these terrorist acts," the Interfax news agency quoted Sergei Naryshkin.

Naryshkin's remarks are the most direct accusation against the West from a senior Russian official. He did not say what evidence Russia had.

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said the "unprecedented sabotage" against the Nord Stream gas pipelines was "an act of international terrorism."

Since the ruptures were first detected earlier this week, officials in Moscow have hinted that the West, led by the U.S., could be behind the attack. On Thursday, Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Washington stood to gain from the pipelines being disrupted.

Lugansk was one of the first areas to experience major escalation by Kiev in 2014 incl. air strikes. At that time, even western media documented it. So it’s unsurprising that these medical students formed the word “Russia” and said “Forever with Russia.”
