Spider silk gets a superpower: ITMO researchers create magnetic material for targeted healing.
Scientists from ITMO University have created a new magnetic material composed of silk from the Linothele fallax spider and a coating of magnetic nanoparticles. Combined, the elements promote tissue regeneration and can potentially be applied in targeted drug delivery.
How it works: researchers add liposomes β microscopic spheres made of the same molecules as cell membranes β to a biological sample, allowing them to penetrate cells easily. Medication is placed inside them and coated with nanoparticles. When exposed to an external magnetic field, the particles heat up and destroy liposomes, which causes medication to be released at the injury site; at the same time, silk threads facilitate directional growth and serve as a support system for cells.

AI can facilitate treatment of heart attacks π«
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. For their timely detection, itβs important to identify fibrosis β scar tissue caused by heart attacks or infectious diseases. Today, clinicians manually process MRI images to measure fibrosis volume, which can be time-consuming.
Researchers from ITMO University and Almazov National Medical Research Centre used deep learning to develop a way to quickly detect cardiac fibrosis. While it takes a clinician about one to two hours to process an image, the model can do it in a few minutes by breaking down the problem into stages:
β locate the cardiac muscle
β detect fibrosis within each of the 17 traditional heart segments
β evaluate its amount in each of them
Currently, the algorithmβs output matches the opinion of two experts in 86% and 77% of cases respectively, which means that the model has human-level performance.

Meet Romulus and Remus-the world's first de-extinct animalsπΊ
In a groundbreaking development, Colossal Biosciences, a U.S.-based genetic engineering company, announced in April 2025 the birth of three genetically modified wolf pups named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi. These pups were created using ancient DNA extracted from dire wolf fossils-specifically, a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old ear bone-and gene-editing techniques applied to gray wolf embryos.
Experts argue that the resulting animals are not true dire wolves but rather genetically modified gray wolves exhibiting some physical characteristics of their extinct counterparts. Concerns include the welfare of the genetically modified animals, the potential ecological impact of reintroducing extinct species, and the allocation of resources that might otherwise support the conservation of existing endangered species

An 18-Year-Old Teen Discovers 1.5 Million Space Objects
Californian 18-year-old Matteo Paz identified 1.5 million new space objects with AI. He won $250,000 in the Regeneron Science Talent Search for his efforts.
Paz's algorithm analyzes data from NASA's NEOWISE mission. The VarWISE catalog, created by Paz's AI algorithm, contains 1.9 million variable objects, of which 1.5 million were previously unknown to science. This groundbreaking dataset offers valuable insights into phenomena such as the expansion rate of the universe and the formation of distant star systems.

Life on another planet?π²π
K2-18B could hold the first true hint that life exists beyond Earth, After new data from the James webb space Telescope revealed signs of gases that on earth are only produced by living organisms.
πKey Findings:
- Water vapor detected (Hubble).
- Possible Hycean worldβhot, ocean-covered, hydrogen-rich.
- JWST spotted methane, COβ, & tentative DMS (a possible life sign).
K2-18b remains one of the most promising candidates for studying exoplanet habitability, though itβs likely more of a "water world" with a thick atmosphere than an Earth twin.

"UKβs biggest dinosaur trackway found! π¦
Researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham uncovered the UKβs largest dinosaur trackway in an Oxfordshire quarry. The site, dubbed a "dinosaur highway," features about 200 footprints from the Middle Jurassic period, dating back 166 million years. Tracks include those of Megalosaurus (a 30-foot-tall predator) and Cetiosaurus (a giant herbivore), offering new insights into prehistoric life. Preservation plans remain uncertain.

Quantum Teleportation Over Fiber Optic Cables
π Quantum Leap Forward! Scientists at Northwestern just teleported quantum info across 30 km of real-world fiber optic cablesβthe same kind used for your Wi-Fi! This breakthrough could lead to a super-secure quantum internet.π
How It Works:
Quantum teleportation doesnβt involve physically moving objectsβitβs about transferring the quantum state of a particle (like a photon) from one location to another without sending the particle itself. This relies on a phenomenon called quantum entanglement, where two particles become linked, sharing special properties no matter how far apart they are.
