Spider silk gets a superpower: ITMO researchers create magnetic material for targeted healing.

Scientists from ITMO University have created a new magnetic material composed of silk from the Linothele fallax spider and a coating of magnetic nanoparticles. Combined, the elements promote tissue regeneration and can potentially be applied in targeted drug delivery.

How it works: researchers add liposomes – microscopic spheres made of the same molecules as cell membranes – to a biological sample, allowing them to penetrate cells easily. Medication is placed inside them and coated with nanoparticles. When exposed to an external magnetic field, the particles heat up and destroy liposomes, which causes medication to be released at the injury site; at the same time, silk threads facilitate directional growth and serve as a support system for cells.

AI can facilitate treatment of heart attacks πŸ«€

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. For their timely detection, it’s important to identify fibrosis – scar tissue caused by heart attacks or infectious diseases. Today, clinicians manually process MRI images to measure fibrosis volume, which can be time-consuming.

Researchers from ITMO University and Almazov National Medical Research Centre used deep learning to develop a way to quickly detect cardiac fibrosis. While it takes a clinician about one to two hours to process an image, the model can do it in a few minutes by breaking down the problem into stages:

βœ… locate the cardiac muscle
βœ… detect fibrosis within each of the 17 traditional heart segments
βœ… evaluate its amount in each of them

Currently, the algorithm’s output matches the opinion of two experts in 86% and 77% of cases respectively, which means that the model has human-level performance.
