Word "terrorist" is selective word. Who gets called one often depends on who you ask, their politics, and how much power they have. But one thing is very clear: being a Muslim does not make someone a terrorist. In fact, the actions of terrorists go completely against what Islam actually teaches.

If we look at history, we see that the "terrorist" label is often used to silence people who are fighting against powerful rulers.

George Washington was called a traitor and a terrorist by the British government for leading the American Revolution.

Nelson Mandela was called a terrorist by the South African government for fighting against apartheid. He was even on the U.S. terrorist list until 2008.

Bhagat Singh, a hero of India's fight for freedom, was called a traitor and executed by the British for his resistance.

Now, look more recent times.Taliban fighters in Afghanistan were called "Islamic terrorists" for years by Western countries and Indiana media. But today, in 2025, many of those same countries are dealing with them as a normal government for political reasons (including India but for now they have normalize relation with Taliban). This shows how the label can change overnight yesterday's enemy can become today's partner.

We see the same thing in the Gaza Genocide. Since Israel was founded in 1948, Palestinians have fought for their right to a homeland. Groups like Hamas, PIJ (Palestine Islamic Jihad) are called terrorist organizations by the U.S. and others. But many Palestinians see them as people fighting against occupation for their legal rights.
Story is often simplified to just "terrorism," which ignores this very complicated history.

This selective use of the label also affects how we see human suffering.

A recent example made this very clear. On August 10, 2025, it was reported that Melania Trump wrote a letter to Russia's President Putin. She asked him to care and Protect the children of Ukraine hurt by the war.
But according to UN reports, no similar letter was sent to Israel's leader about the thousands of Palestinian children killed or forced from their homes in Gaza.

This difference makes people wonder about bias. Is the crisis in Ukraine taken more seriously because it affects a mostly Christian population, while the people in Gaza are mostly Muslim? Why is one tragedy more important than another?

word "terrorist" is not a simple, neutral word. It is often used as a weapon to make an enemy seem less human and their cause less valid.

One more example, U.S. has done things that some would call terrorism like drone strikes that killed civilians in Pakistan and Yemen, Syria,Atom on Hiroshima and Cambodia war or the 2003 invasion of Iraq that was based on wrong information and led to countless deaths.
These actions are almost never called "terrorism" in the news. This makes you ask: Who gets to decide what this word means? And why?

So, before we call any group or person a terrorist, we need to think few questions: Who is calling them that? What do they have to gain? What is the real story behind the conflict?
Only by asking these questions can we see past the propaganda and get closer to the truth.
