Khaled Hosseini (American author)
___________
(born March 4, 1965, Kabul, Afghanistan) Afghan-born American novelist who was known for his vivid depictions of Afghanistan, most notably in The Kite Runner (2003).
Hosseini began working in 2001 on The Kite Runner, writing at 4:00 am before heading to his medical practice. Hosseini’s second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007), was inspired by his observations of women wearing burkas during a 2003 visit to Afghanistan, his first since childhood. Continuing in the overtly topical vein of The Kite Runner, the book depicts the radical shifts in the political and social climate of Afghanistan through the relationship between two women, Mariam and Laila, the first and second wives of an abusive husband.
And the Mountains Echoed (2013) concerns a brother and sister separated when the latter is given up for adoption because of their family’s straitened circumstances. The novel chronicles the decades following the siblings’ divergence in 1950s Afghanistan.

“It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn't make everything all right. It didn't make ANYTHING all right. Only a smile. A tiny thing. A leaf in the woods, shaking in the wake of a startled bird's flight. But I'll take it. With open arms. Because when spring comes, it melts the snow one flake at a time, and maybe I just witnessed the first flake melting."
