When I was a child I was groomed, sexually abused, sodomized and raped between the ages of 6 to 9 years old. My family and I lived in a small town and my father was a gay man. He was diagnosed with HIV in the early 1980s. On top of being abused I was tormented by people attacking me because of my fathers sexual orientation many hurtful words were said. I was called a whore, slut and a little bitch by my abusers, I was made to feel like I was dirty and contaminated. I felt ashamed and worthless. I wanted to die as a small child. My very first experience with death was when my cousin was brutally murdered. I had always blamed myself for his murder.
He was babysitting me one night and he had gone to take a shower. I went into the bathroom, got undressed and got into the shower with him. I tried touching my own cousin because I thought it was normal. He said whoa :what are you doing?" My reply was I am showing how much I love you. When my parents came home, he told them what had happened. Despite all my pleading and crying for him not to tell my parents. I thought I was going to be punished. The following morning my parents went to the Owego police department and my cousin went to the NY state police.
A NY state trooper named Joseph B. came to speak with me at my school and I refused to talk to him out of fear. The brother of one of the men who had molested me, tried to stab me in my chest to silence me.
A few days later on April 13, 1984 my cousin was shot and stabbed and his body was dragged onto the train tracks. I will never forget the sound of the train that night. A loud screeching terrible sound that was deafening.
The day after he was murdered Joseph B, came and spoke to me again, he told me my cousin was gone. Hearing that my cousin was never coming back devastated me and I blamed myself my entire life. Looking back I now know it is not my fault, the fault is on the men who murdered him. He was only trying to protect me. The fault lies on the men who molested and raped me.
From that moment on I had 3 men working so hard to get me to open up. Joseph, took me to the cemetery every day to visit my cousin. Those 3 men taught me that I could be brave, that I have a powerful voice and because of them I put one of the men who had sexually abused and raped me in prison for almost 13 years.
I am asking that people speak up and share their stories. Our voices are more powerful than the few and together we will be unstoppable.
For as long as I can remember the wicked have been trying to normalize pedophilia.
We must be the voices for the voiceless. We must show the children they can speak up, they do not have to hide in the dark and they are loved. They need to know it's not their fault and they have nothing to be ashamed of. We have to fight for the children.
