My business is in litigation. My company handled the depositions for the LA archdiocese abuse case that was settled for around 600 million dollars. I was in many of the 10 to 12 hour depositions that were taken of the victims most of whom were in their late 50's to late 60's. All of them had been abused as teen boys by priests they and their families knew well and trusted. There was a very well planned system in LA for this abuse to thrive. The priests had a specific confessional where they took their victims to be absolved of the sin. They were told never to discuss it with anyone other than in the confessional at this site or face God's and the churches wrath. All of the attorneys for the church tried to make it seem like the victims were somehow to blame by calling into question their lifestyles and any trouble they had gotten into as kids. But each victim came across as credible strong men who had a lifetime of issues stemming from this abuse. Mostly an only one time event. One had never been able to sleep with anyone but a prostitute because he felt unworthy of a true godly relationship. One had 4 divorces and was never able to truly be in an honest relationship because he harbored this deep secret. Another went back and forth between thinking he was straight and gay. He hooked up with gay priests during his marriage. One who wanted to become a priest had joined multiple religions for a few years here and there and in the end lived alone without a God and that was his greatest loss...any possibility of having the holy connection with God that he once had. It was devastating to hear and see and in the end the church paid them what amounted to 600 grand a piece to go away.
