Ten years ago today, Gus released Crybaby.

His third solo mixtape, Crybaby came together between Pasadena and Long Beach during the spring of 2016, one of the most exciting and fulfilling periods of his career. Independent and musically experimental, Gus was surrounded by creative energy in Los Angeles and feeling optimistic about his art and the future.

After a brief stint in Denver with Schemaposse, Gus returned to 1700 University Drive in Pasadena at the end of March. On April 10, he got his iconic “Crybaby” tattoo above his eye. That same week, he made and released “nineteen” and began conceptualizing his upcoming mixtape. When commissioning artist Nick Everitt for the cover art, Gus asked for a dove with his “Crybaby” script, crying “lots of tears.” He was thrilled with the result and shared it three days later to announce the project.

Throughout the spring, Gus’s momentum didn’t slow. By May 7, he had already made six songs, recording with a cheap microphone and mixing vocals in GarageBand. That day, he debuted some of them live in downtown Los Angeles while wearing one of his newly ordered Crybaby shirts. On May 8, Gus met Tracy, and together they created “white tee” and its music video with Killstation at University Drive.

Later that month, Gus flew home to Long Beach, where he recorded at his friend Tyler’s house while working simultaneously on Crybaby and Teen Romance. After celebrating his brother Oskar’s college graduation, he returned to Pasadena on June 9. The next day, he made “skyscrapers” and released the completed mixtape to SoundCloud.

Crybaby remains one of Gus’s most beloved projects, capturing a particularly exciting chapter of his career. It holds a special place in the hearts of everyone involved in its creation, and the fans who continue to celebrate it ten years later.

Eleven years ago today, Gus and OmenXIII released a five track project called In the Bedroom, I Confess. Today, we are proud to bring the project to all streaming platforms, along with the addition of a bonus track, “Family.”

In the spring of 2015, Gus was still in the early stages of making music, and Omen was one of many more experienced artists he admired in the underground SoundCloud scene. In May, around the time of releasing Feelz, Gus reached out to Omen via email, and they communicated for a short while before beginning to collaborate remotely. Over the course of about ten days, they created and released these five songs, which were ultimately compiled into a project on June 17, 2015.

In the Bedroom, I Confess offers a glimpse into the early sound of LiL PEEP, recorded at a time when Gus was still experimenting both musically and stylistically, while drawing inspiration from the artists he looked up to. He was thrilled by the opportunity to work with one of those artists and felt welcomed into the SoundCloud community. Those feelings of camaraderie and acceptance helped motivate Gus through the summer of 2015, as he began to develop the musical foundation that would become his debut mixtape.

We are grateful to Omen for his part in that journey and for helping provide an environment that encouraged Gus during such an important early chapter of his development as an artist.
