IGNOU Organizes Seminar on Earth Day 2026 on the Theme “Our Power, Our Planet”



The School of Sciences (SOS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), successfully organized a seminar to mark Earth Day 2026 on April 22, 2026. The seminar, based on the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlighted the urgent need for collective action towards environmental conservation and sustainable development.



The programme commenced with the welcoming of the distinguished guests by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, followed by the formal welcome of the Vice Chancellor by the Director, School of Sciences. In the welcome address, the Director, SOS, emphasized the importance of academic institutions in fostering environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable practices among learners and society at large.



Shri Uma Shankar Pandey, noted social worker, environmentalist, and Padma Shri awardee, delivered an insightful lecture on “Water Conservation.” Drawing from his extensive grassroots experience, he underscored the critical importance of water conservation and community participation in addressing water scarcity. He highlighted practical, low-cost methods of water management and stressed the need for behavioural change and local initiatives to ensure long-term water security.



Prof. Tejbir Singh Rana, Department of Geography, Shivaji College, University of Delhi, and Member of N-CAMPA under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, spoke on “Development and Environmental Crisis.” In his address, Prof. Rana elaborated on the challenges posed by rapid development and its impact on ecological balance. He emphasized the need for sustainable development models that integrate environmental considerations into policy and planning, and called for a balanced approach that aligns economic growth with environmental protection.



Earlier, Prof. Shubhakanta Mohapatra from the Geography Discipline, SOS, introduced Shri Uma Shankar Pandey and also facilitated the introduction of Prof. Tejbir Singh Rana. A short video showcasing the contributions of Shri Pandey to environmental conservation was also screened.

The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty, learners, and staff, and served as an important platform for dialogue and reflection on pressing environmental issues, inspiring collective responsibility towards building a sustainable future.
