STB to focus on business tourism as part of strategy to recapture tourism demand
"The rumours about the decline or demise of business travel have proven to be greatly exaggerated," said STB CEO Keith Tan. "In the US and Europe, our MICE stakeholders tell us that there is tremendous demand for face-to-face business meetings and many of them have resumed."
Accordingly, some S$500 million has been set aside to support the sector in the coming years.

“Customers have become accustomed to some of the changes many retailers swiftly made during the pandemic, and they want those changes to stay, like free extended returns and click-and-collect. If other businesses don’t follow suit, they will lose customers,” says Gargav.
“The expectations of customers are fairly simple, but not many retailers are able to deliver on them. For example, 62 per cent of APAC consumers would be more loyal to retailers that let them buy things online and return in-store. However, only 22 per cent of APAC retailers offer this.”

Southeast Asia’s biggest consumer trends to know going into 2022
Increased Digitalisation
By market, the Philippines recorded the highest proportion of new digital consumers, with 20 percent coming online in 2020 and 2021, topping the Southeast Asian average of 16 percent. Thailand recruited 18 percent of its total digital consumers during the pandemic, while Malaysia sat at 15 percent, followed by Vietnam (14 percent), Indonesia (13 percent) and Singapore at 10 percent.
Buy Now Pay Later
For example, in Indonesia, where credit card ownership is scarce and m-commerce is hugely popular, some 55 percent of new e-commerce users paid using BNPL, according to Kredivo and Katadata Insight Centre. Indonesia also saw a 10x increase in searches for e-wallet services and 15x rise in BNPL services in the last five years, according to Google Search Trends, making it one of the fastest growing markets for the BNPL service.
Sustainability
While more are shopping online, 80 percent of Southeast Asians prefer to buy from companies that have invested in lessening their negative social and environmental impacts, according to a report by the Global Survey of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability.
Modest wear
“As casualwear becomes de rigueur at home, Muslim consumers find new ways to practise modesty indoors—especially during Zoom calls,” said the Zalora report. “Think denim jeans paired with crisp shirts and a hijab in this regard, where everyday comfort meets business chic.”
Luxury
Southeast Asian shoppers spent an average of US$127.50 per person on luxury items across e-commerce platforms, from February to July in 2021, according to iPrice.

First air taxi flights in S'pore to take scenic route around Marina Bay if approved
If all goes to plan, Volocopter's maiden commercial flight here will take passengers from a take-off and landing area in Marina South to the Marina Reservoir and back, going over the Marina Barrage and the Benjamin Sheares Bridge at an altitude of 100m to 150m.
The journey, which will also take in parts of Kallang Basin near Tanjong Rhu, will last about 15 minutes.
"Why a tourist flight? Because to be quite transparent, Singapore does not have a congestion problem on the ground, but you have around 20 million visitors per year who want to have excitement, an experience.
In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, 19.1 million travellers visited Singapore, spending close to $28 billion.

“The new MOU seeks to build on these areas of collaboration by focusing on mobilising investment, financing, management skills, and technologies - available from the Singapore public and private sectors - for private sector development projects in ADB developing member countries,” said MOF.
The bank and Singapore will cooperate in promoting the use of new technology and processes in areas such as developing liveable cities, addressing climate change challenges and utilising financial technology to improve financial market efficiency.
Singapore was a founding member of the ADB when the bank was established in 1966. It borrowed from ADB until 1980 and formally graduated from borrowing in 1998.
Since 2001, Singapore has contributed to ADB’s concessional fund, the Asian Development Fund, as well as the Technical Assistance Special Fund. Singapore is also a participant in the ASEAN Infrastructure Fund which is supported by ADB.
