This day in history - during childbirth, Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Shah Jahan, the ruler of the Mughal Empire, died.
It happened on June 17, 1631. So why is the Taj Mahal in the photo? Yes, because saddened by the death of his beloved, Shah Jahan ordered the construction of a mausoleum such as the world has not yet seen.
He succeeded - after 22 years, the construction was completed. And the Taj Mahal remains to this day both a symbol of great love and an example of architectural perfection.
