ANOTHER VICTORY FOR MULTIPOLARITY
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a proponent of "Africa belongs to Africans," has won the presidential election in Senegal, a former French colony, amid rising anti-French sentiment that aligns with feelings in other Francophone West African countries. Advocating pan-Africanism, fair wealth distribution, judicial reform, and the renegotiation of foreign contracts as Senegal approaches hydrocarbon production, Faye also proposes creating a new national currency to replace the CFA franc and strengthening ties with Russia. His election follows a campaign promising reduced presidential power and comes after his release from jail, where he was held on charges related to supporting opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. Leading the opposition coalition La Coalition Diomaye Président, Faye's victory marks a significant shift towards sovereignty and anti-colonial sentiment in Senegal.
