The American Republican leadership should remember that India’s commitment to strategic autonomy is neither new nor partisan. It is a legacy that runs from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the early 1950s, when the world was sharply divided between the United States and the Soviet Union, India chose an independent path and became one of the leading voices behind the Non-Aligned Movement. That tradition of independent decision-making has continued through successive governments.

India is a sovereign democracy, fully capable of framing laws and policies in accordance with its national interests and constitutional framework. External commentary on our domestic legislative process should therefore be measured and respectful of India’s sovereignty.

The United States and India share important democratic values and strategic interests. Such a relationship is best strengthened through mutual respect , not through unnecessary interference in each other’s internal affairs.

India is proud of its civilisational democratic legacy and its place as the “Mother of Democracy.” Our sovereignty and independent foreign policy are matters of national conviction, not matters for external approval.
