Despite what some in our circles have said, I believe that the attempted assasination on Trump actually gives us even less reason to support his candidacy.

As we've seen over the past week, the attempt on his life has given Trump a pretext to pivot away from policy and toward rhetoric about bringing the country together and being a president for all Americans. One might say that this is to be expected given that he is now the official GOP candidate and the campaign is going into general election mode. This, however, doesn't really apply to Trump because his previous campaign behavior consisted of him hammering his key issues right through November. This situation gives him even more cover to not fulfill his campaign promises.

Making matters even worse, the cult of personality aspect of his appeal is heightened by his admittedly brave reaction to being under fire. Sympathy for him and his family also contributes to his supporters focusing even more on personality and emotion. Trump supporters, whether fanatical or hesitant, will now be less demanding when it comes to actual policy.
